Following the decision on Tuesday, several hundred people gathered in front of Vancouver’s CBC building to express their dissent. Jonathan Boron, Embark board member, describes the event as an act of “unified defiance.” Boron elaborates, “There were so many people from so many different backgrounds, all disturbed and outraged by the Trudeau government’s decision. There was an immense sense of betrayal, but also very much a unified and defiant call to action.”

Additionally, plans for a triple expansion of the tank farm at the base of Burnaby Mountain threatens the health and safety of SFU students and local residents. The storage of bitumen transported via the pipeline on Burnaby Mountain poses a fire hazard, water safety risk, and increases transport emissions.

Embark views the Trans Mountain pipeline as reneging on Canada’s climate commitment, expressed on the global stage at COP21 in Paris. The Kinder Morgan pipeline, if built, would make it extremely difficult for the country to meet its Paris emission reduction targets and would irreparably impact our ability to collectively work towards a safe future.
