Dec 21, 2017 | Uncategorized

We’d like to present the recipients of the Embark Volunteer of the Semester award, Angela Ang and Priscilla Lam. This acknowledgement is meant to celebrate a particularly outstanding volunteer who has shown a high level of commitment and initiative. They have gone above and beyond what’s expected at Embark and we wanted to explore why they love volunteering for Embark. This time around, we just couldn’t pick one person to award so we’ve picked TWO! Below are quick interviews with each recipient talking about what they’ve done with our organization:

When did you join as a volunteer at Embark and what have you done here?

I started volunteering in January 2017. I started off with Food Rescue, and this Fall I’m taking part in the Sustainability Peer Program. Food Rescue interested me because it’s a great way to bring awareness to wasted food, and give back to the community. I didn’t know what I was getting into with the Peer Program, but it has been such a great experience. I’ve learned so much about sustainability from different angles, and it’s been refreshing to be around people who care about the same things and want change. For example, I never thought of colonization as a sustainability challenge but it’s true. Indigenous peoples have different knowledge of the land and if our society aligned more with their understandings of the environment we may be able to better sustain ourselves as a society.

Why are you interested in volunteering at Embark?

My first year of university I focused on school. I joined student clubs, but there was not as much passion and participation. I saw Embark at a table and I thought, “I’d like to learn more about sustainability”, and the design was cool, so I went on to the website to get involved. I liked how Embark emphasizes empowerment and learning, and I’m excited to see how it grows in the future.

What are the benefits of volunteering at Embark?

The people that I meet are very knowledgeable and teach me so much. Everyone is easy to talk to. I like surrounding myself with positive people that add to my journey of exploring sustainability.

What’s your favourite thing about Embark?

Because it’s a non-profit, Embark is able to put lots of time and resources into its programs. Embark is able to reach out to more people and run successful programs. Not to mention, Tessa (Programs Manager) and Rachel (Peer Program Coordinator) are amazingly passionate and lovely people to be around.

What are your main takeaways from volunteering?

That I have so much more to learn about sustainability and how we can improve the way we live with the environment. Also, lots of people care about sustainability if knowledge and means to do so are shared.
