Embark Sustainability Society is an independent, student-centred non-profit working across SFU campuses. Our organization focuses on climate and food justice in our programs and initiativessome of our ongoing work includes our Food Rescue program, Learning Gardens, and Sustainability Career Nights. Embark Sustainability supports SFU students and associate members to discover their role in building a sustainable future based on their unique skills and interests.

To carry out our mission, we need to be able to communicate and be transparent with you. At Embark Sustainability Society we value you and recognize your right to privacy. Your personal data is always protected with us and we do our best to ensure you feel secure with our process.  

This Privacy Policy describes our policies and procedures on the collection, use and safeguard your personal information. You’re always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns regarding our processing.

What we collect

The information we process can be used to identify or contact specific individuals. While using our service we may ask you to provide us with personal information, which may include:

– Email address
– First name and last name
– Pronouns
– Location
– Business contact
– Usage data 

We may ask for this information in a variety of ways, including website forms, surveys, opt-in mail forms, membership purchases, or donations. 

Usage data may include information such as IP address, browser type, the page your visit, the time and date of your visit, time spent on those pages, unique device identifiers and other diagnostic data.

How we use information about you

Embark Sustainability Society may use Personal Data for the following purposes:

To provide and maintain our website, including to monitor the usage.
– To contact you: To contact you by email, or other equivalent forms of electronic communication, like newsletters, products or contracted services, security updates, or other implementation.
– To manage your requests: to attend and manage your request to us.

We want to highlight that the information you provide us with is kept in strict confidence. We make sure that only employees who need to perform a specific job are granted access to provided personal data.

Some of the servers on which Embark Sustainability Society’s information is stored are located outside of Canada. By providing us with personal information, you consent to transfer information across borders. These servers are third-party CRM tools (Google Suite, Mailchimp, Stripe, Monday.com). Such services have resources dedicated to maintaining security and confidentiality. If you want to know more about their written policies, we’re redirecting you to their platforms.

How Information about you is shared

We do not exchange or by any means sell email addresses with other organizations.
We sometimes share data, such as personal information, with various CRM recipients in order to provide the service mentioned above.

Payment Service Providers
To manage membership payments and donations, we use Stripe. Stripe is responsible for their own handling of your personal information and has separate terms and conditions that apply to them.

Your choices

You have the right to know what Personal Data we use. We don’t collect registrations, but you can still receive a complete user extract. We welcome you to contact our webmaster via email; communications@embarksustainability.

Regarding if you wish to redraw your consent for direct marketing and newsletter, you have the right, at any time, to have your personal information deleted or blocked. 

This does not apply if we are required by law, for example, to preserve or otherwise process the information or if the information is required to fulfill an agreement with you.

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.

We understand that not everyone is as passionate as we are about climate equity, and food justice at SFU. For that reason, we’ve created a Member Opt-out and Fee Refund Policy that allows students to request refunds. Members can submit a request to opt-out here.

Cookies

Embark Sustainability Society uses Meta, Google and other social media services to keep members, supporters and others who are interested in our organization up to date. We may therefore also use these cookies to test new advertisements, pages, features or new functionality of the website to see how our users react to them. 

We also use Google Analytics to gather information automatically about visits to our website to improve, maintain, and evaluate traffic statistics. Google Analytics collects information about your movement within our site but does not collect personal information.
