Photographer & Videographer

Type: Short-term contract
Honorarium: $700
Location: SFU – Burnaby Campus
Reports to: Communications Manager

Duration: June to August 2026

Hours of Work: Approximately 10–15 hours per month (June–August 2026), with 5 hours allocated to onboarding and training in June.

Embark Sustainability is a resource hub empowering SFU students on their sustainability journeys through dialogue and transformative action. Our mission is to create a hub that empowers and resources SFU students and allies in their sustainability journeys. We serve transformative communities by centring anti-oppression, decolonization, and equity in impactful programming, events, and initiatives. Through this work, we spark dialogue and drive action to dismantle oppressive frameworks within institutions and our interconnected climate and food systems.

About the Role

Are you a photographer looking to build your portfolio? We are seeking a photographer and videographer to document* Embark’s programming and prepare content that will engage audiences and reflect the mission, vision, and values of Embark Sustainability.  

*Bringing your own equipment is preferred. Please let us know if this is a barrier.

Responsibilities
  • Develop visual content (photo & video) to document Embark Sustainability programs, events and other campus-wide networking. 
  • Capture compelling photography and videography that aligns with Embark Sustainability’s brand guide and reinforces our mission, vision, and values.
  • Edit photography/videography following Embark Sustainability’s brand guidelines.
  • Share visual content with the Communication Manager to be used on our social media channels and for other marketing purposes.
  • Collaborate with the Gardens Manager and Director of Engagement to understand program priorities and identify opportunities to capture content related to the Learning Gardens Food Rescue, and Community Kitchen programs for social media and digital storytelling.
  • Ready and able to finalize images for publishing within 24 hours of an event.
  • Abide by Embark Sustainability’s community agreements.
Qualifications
  • Looking to build their portfolio in photography, videography, creative media and digital storytelling.
  • Have photography/videography experience, a knack for visuals. 
  • Have experience editing photo and/or video content.
  • Confident in capturing motion-rich, interactive photos and videos.
  • Familiar or comfortable with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, CapCut, Reels.
  • Well-organized and able to work independently.
  • Available and able to attend all key program dates.
  • Passionate about advancing Food justice, Climate Equity and intersectional sustainability at SFU.
  • Excellent time manager, capable of balancing academic and other commitments.
  • A current student enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at Simon Fraser University, or a registered Associate Member

 

Bonus Qualifications
  • Experience covering live events, workshops, or community programming, especially for a non-profit, student organization, or community group.
  • Experience conducting interviews or capturing candid moments respectfully and authentically.
  • Experience creating short-form digital content, including Reels, TikToks, and other social media video content.
Key Program Dates

All shoots must take place during active program hours listed below and in coordination with Embark staff. Below are Embark’s program dates for the Summer Term. The Photographer & Videographer will complete a total of four to five fixed 30-minute shoots per month across Embark’s programming (typically two shoots per program each month, except for monthly Community Kitchen). These fixed shoots will form the core monthly deliverables. 

There may also be opportunities for additional optional shoots, depending on program need, content priorities, and the Photographer & Videographer’s availability. Editing and post-production work can be completed flexibly and independently, provided agreed-upon deadlines are met.

 

Garden Cohort

Thursdays from 11:00AM – 12:30PM (July 9 – August 20)

Food Rescue

Thursdays 1:30PM – 2:45PM (until August 6)

Community Kitchen

Wednesday, July 29, 5:30PM – 9:30PM 

 

Time Commitment
Training (June, ~5 hours)

Onboarding, brand and content alignment, and initial shooting/editing orientation

 

Ongoing (~10-15 hours/month)
  • 4-5 hours Photography/videography (short shoots across 3 programs)
  • 2–3 hrs: Editing and content selection
  • 1 hr: Uploading, organizing, and communication
  • 0.5–1 hr: Biweekly check-ins with Communications Manager
  • Approximately 5 flexible hours: To support the responsibilities above as needed, including collaboration and planning discussions with the Garden Manager and Director of Engagement
