Welcome to Community Kitchen, where culinary creativity meets cultural celebration 🍽️ This collaborative cooking event aims to nurture conversations about food through the lens of justice, culture, and shared experience. Featuring plant-based recipes and fresh vegetables, join us to hear stories, gain culinary knowledge, connect with others, and top off the night by sharing a free meal you helped prepare.

Whether you’re a seasoned chef or new to the kitchen, come together with fellow food enthusiasts to connect, learn, and share in the joy of cooking.🥣

You’ll be making:

  • Veggie Lumpia, a Filipino dish (vegan option available)
  • Gado-Gado, an Indonesian dish (vegan option available)
  • Turnip Mash, an Irish Dish (vegan and gluten free options available)
  • Flammekueche, a German Dish (vegan and gluten free options available)

Please note recipes may contain traces of peanuts.

This event is first-come first-serve until we reach capacity, so we encourage you to register and arrive 10 minutes early. Thanks and see you there!✨

This event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations.

About the facilitators

Zaena Tesfa

Zaena (she/they) is Programs Manager of Embark, pepperoncini enthusiast, and a cook to many. After going vegan in 2019, she’s been on an expedition to explore the plant-based cuisines of different cultures, and adores, more than anything, surprising folks with how delicious plant-based dishes can be!

Event Accessibility

Embark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members.

This event will be held indoors at the Greater Vancouver Foodbank (8345 Winston Street, Burnaby). Accessibility details include:

  • Venue has limited parking available on a first-come, first-serve basis 
  • As we’ll be addressing sensitive topics, it’s important that our attendees are able to address their needs in the moment. Attendees are free to opt in and opt out of activities as suits their needs throughout the event, including exiting and re-entering the event space.
  • We aim to host a scent-free space. Please refrain from wearing scented products in attendance of this event.
  • If you require ASL interpretation, please email food@embarksustainability.org before April 8th.

We aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible. If we can take further action to make this event accessible to you, please contact Embark Sustainability’s Food Justice Coordinator at food@embarksustainability.org.
