About the Role

This role will be responsible for the ideation, planning, coordination, and evaluation of initiatives regarding Food Justice. Working closely with your Food Justice Collective of students and the rest of the programs team, this role creates initiatives that align with Embark’s Theory of Change and values. With support from the Director of Engagement, you’ll create space for SFU students to get involved, learn, and take action on Food Justice issues through engagements and events planned and hosted by you. This is a perfect opportunity if you’re ready to facilitate creative and exciting learning avenues for students in an environmental non-profit setting. 

Responsiblities

Event and Program Delivery

  • Design and host 1 large-scale event related to Food Justice
  • Work with the Director of Engagement, external partners and the collective to plan, implement, and host 2-3 Food Justice workshops per semester
  • Choosing diverse guest speakers if needed, with lived-experience and/or community knowledge and/or education
  • Creating opportunities for students to engage in diverse climate topics, such as food justice issues or solutions toward food justice
  • Social media “live” management – posting to stories during events
  • Supporting the Food Justice collective with event outreach:
    • Tabling at high-traffic locations at SFU
    • Postering
    • Speaking to classrooms
    • Sharing with networks (through social media and email)
  • Photography and filming during programs, or arranging for a suitable alternative
  • Participate in the necessary administrative documentation process to ensure the success of events, including but not limited to: meeting agendas, project plans, timelines, and providing timeline updates
  • Creating post-event reflections, including session-specific feedback, audience participation, and general feedback

Food Justice Collective Support

  • Recruiting and onboarding a collective of 4-5 members with support from the Director of Engagement
  • Setting up & facilitating weekly group meetings with the collective
  • Ensuring collective members are aware of anti-oppression-based event planning practices
  • Ensuring the collective has templates and tools to use when project planning
  • Creating a safe and enjoyable environment for all collective members 
  • Outlining collective goals and ensuring we can provide a space for collective members to reach these goals
  • Support the development of collective members’ skills and interests
  • Encouraging the collective team to support food justicey initiatives at Embark Sustainability

Internal Embark Responsibility 

  • Attend Embark-Wide socials and trainings
  • Collaborate and/or provide feedback on project plans with other Programs Coordinators
  • Supporting Director of Engagement in event facilitation
  • Maintain regular communication with the Communications Manager
  • Support the planning of volunteer appreciation events or campaigns

Relationship/Network Building

  • Expand and deepen relationships with student groups and networks, focusing on food justice at SFU
  • Lead Embark’s outreach activities with membership at large (e.g. Services Fair, Clubs Days, and others as needed)
  • Working in Embark’s Studio Office, 50% of weekly working hours – exceptions for weeks with Events
  • Supporting student inquiries about and the use of the Embark space

Accountability & Reporting

  • Keep an up-to-date timesheet of the number of hours and tasks performed 
  • Regular meetings, as agreed upon, with the Director of Engagement and other Directors or Managers as needed
  • Use tools frequented by Embarkers (Monday.com, Google Calendars, Slack, JEDDI Resources, Event Planning Templates)
  • Creating post-event content, including reflections on the guest speaker’s stories, audience participation, and general feedback
  • Sharing deliverables on a timely basis
    • Team Meeting Agendas
    • Team Deliverables
    • Project plans, timelines, and timeline updates
    • Outline of resources shared and discussed with the team
      • JEDDI and Food Justice learning resources
      • Project management resources

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate:

  • Must be a current SFU student 
  • Has availability on most Wednesdays to host Food Justice events and programming, and to complete tasks as needed 
  • Is passionate about food justice and has an eagerness to explore this topic through an anti-oppression lens
  • Has lived, community, education, work, and/or volunteer experience with food justice
  • Has excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Is able to facilitate a safe space for group thinking and guide discussions
    • Is comfortable with public speaking and connecting with people from different backgrounds
  • Has excellent organizational, administrative, research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Is an experienced event planner and/or community organizer who takes initiatives, meets deadlines, and is highly responsible
  • Enjoys meeting new people and connecting with others
  • Has working knowledge of Google Drive, G Suite, Zoom, and other online platforms to enable collaboration
