About the event

Join us for an art-based teach-in exploring climate emotions, wellbeing, and messy hope!

How can art help us navigate the emotions that come with living through the climate crisis? Through the creative process of cyanotype printing, this climate workshop invites participants to explore art as a way to process feelings of grief, anxiety, hopelessness, and more, while making space for connection, collective resistance, and hope.

Get ready to:

  • Learn the basics of cyanotype printing
  • Create personal and collaborative cyanotype prints using local plants, image negatives, and coffee and tea toning
  • Explore how art can connect us to place, personal and cultural histories, climate emotions, and movements of resistance

No previous art experience or knowledge of cyanotype printing is needed. Come create, connect, and explore what hope can look like in the face of the climate crisis—and leave with your own climate-inspired prints!

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Naomi Maya Leung 梁珮恩 (they/she)

Meet Naomi

Naomi Maya Leung 梁珮恩 is a Han Cantonese settler, climate justice facilitator, photographer, and mixed-media artist with familial connections to Hong Kong and Malaysia. Their artistic practice is informed by movements for queer ecology, ecofeminism, international solidarities, and community archival practices.

Naomi appreciates how photography, art, and archival practices drive them to critically (re)imagine how livable and liberated histories, realities, and futures can feel, look, and sound like. Naomi is a senior researcher in the psychology of climate justice lab at UBC and a MSc candidate for Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences. They have a background in climate justice education programming and policy change with UBC Sustainability, The Climate Justice Organizing HUB, Sustainabiliteens, Climate Education Reform BC, Asha Collective, and Be the Change Earth Alliance.

As a queer and genderqueer racialized artist and organizer, they intimately know the gap in funding and mobilization of mental health support for their own communities’ well-being. Naomi desires to create anti-colonial spaces centering trans and queer communities to process intergenerational trauma, grief, and to co-create possibilities and programming for hope and healing.
