Community Kitchen: Language as Nourishment

Date & Time

Wed, June 25, 2025
5:30 PM – 9:30 PM PDT

Location

SUB Community Kitchen, room #2125 – SFU Burnaby

In celebration of Indigenous History Month, we are thrilled to be joined by the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Student Association (FNMISA) to bring you an unforgettable community kitchen! Through their unique perspectives, facilitators Kil Daagwiiya and James Houle will lead a flavour-packed conversation about Indigenous language vitalization and its role within food justice. Ancestral languages carry important knowledge of land, seasonality, and traditional foodways, which has been essential to nourishing communities for generations. Come out to enjoy a meal as we learn about the powerful connection between land, food, and language while celebrating Indigenous cultures!

We’ll be making:

  • Indian Tacos (Frybread and Seasoned Meat)
  • Jum (Halibut Stew)

Please be mindful of dietary restrictions – all recipes contain meat or fish product.

AGENDA

  • Introductions and Housekeeping
  • Cooking, Games and Colouring
  • Eating and Discussion
  • Wrap-up and Clean-up

Whether you’re a seasoned chef or new to the kitchen, all are welcome! This event is first-come first-serve until we reach capacity, so we encourage you to register and arrive 10 minutes early. Thanks and see you there!✨
