SUMMARY:Virtual Community Kitchen: Tu Causa Es Mi Causa\, a Spudtacular sign-off
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nJUNE’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, June 1st. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Embark’s faboulus Programs Manager\, Melisa Tang Choy 邓梅英 ! \nMelisa Tang Choy 邓梅英 (she/her/hers) is the daughter of Chinese immigrants from Guangdong province\, born and raised in Lima\, Peru\, and now an immigrant settler on the ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. She grew up in her family’s chifa (Chinese-Peruvian restaurant)\, which has been running in the same spot since the late 1990’s\, so food and cooking have always had a special place in her heart. Peru is home to the biggest Chinese diaspora in Latin America. \nMelisa is passionate about people\, their stories and their histories\, place-making and accessibility. She’s fueled by bread-making and bread-sharing\, the water\, too much coffee and scary films (the scarier\, the better). \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org\, by Tuesday\, May 25 th at 5 pm. We will be asking for your contact information and to fill out a Participant Data Storage Agreement. \nWhen are we sending the recipes out? \nWe will be sending out the recipes in advance so you have time to get the ingredients. We will also be attaching the recipe with each reminder. \nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, and Tsawwassen Nations. \nACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. If you require an accessibility-related measure please contact Melisa at programs@embarksustainability.org . \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager at programs@embarksustainability.org.

SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: An evening of Mango-nificense
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students. \nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nFEBRUARY’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, February 11th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Lofty! \nLofty : I’m an international student from Guinea studying political science at Simon Fraser University. After living here for a few years now\, one of the many things I appreciate about Vancouver is its culinary diversity. Like many people\, I love eating; there is nothing better than knowing you can find a little bit of everything from everywhere here. In Africa\, We pride ourselves in the tastefulness of our organic fruits and vegetables. If there is one fruit that we have in abundance in Guinée\, it is mango\, especially found during the monsoon seasons. Since Guinean cuisine is all about stews\, a dish incorporating mango was bound to happen. The dish I’m going to share with you guys is Mango Stew. \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org\, by Tuesday February 9th at 12pm. We will be asking for your contact information and to fill out a Participant Data Storage Agreement. \nWhen are we sending the recipes out?\nWe will be sending out the recipes one week in advance so you have time to get the ingredients. We will also be attaching the recipe with each reminder. \n\nACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nWe acknowledge that Embark Sustainability’s work takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, Stó:lō\, and Tsawwassen Nations. \nACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. SUMMARY:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action - Climate Literacy 101: On a Path to Climate Success
DESCRIPTION:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action \nWednesday\, June 3rd \n12pm-1pm \nDr. Mark Jaccard will speak on how climate-concerned citizens can overcome myths that hinder us from acting in time to prevent extreme climate impacts. Their actions can involve personal consumption choices (electric vehicles\, heat pumps) but these only have an effect if citizens are also engaged in the political process and civil society to elect and support climate-sincere politicians. These personal and collective efforts must align with and foster a global strategy of decarbonization\, especially in developing countries. Come to the talk to find out what is required on a simple path to climate success and what you can contribute. \n  \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a Virtual Lunch & Learn Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAre you an SFU student\, faculty member\, or staff climate champion committed to growing your understanding of climate science and pathways for change? \nClimate Literacy 101 is an opportunity to learn from and engage with leading climate science and policy experts at Simon Fraser University. SUMMARY:Climate Literacy 101: On a Path to Climate Success
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Virtual Lunch & Learn Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAre you an SFU student\, faculty member\, or staff climate champion committed to growing your understanding of climate science and pathways for change? \nClimate Literacy 101 is an opportunity to learn from and engage with leading climate science and policy experts at Simon Fraser University. We are grateful to have Dr. Kirsten Zickfeld and Dr. Mark Jaccard presenting on the state of the climate and how citizens can contribute to climate success\, and participating in a Q&A session over Zoom. The event series\, co-hosted by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions and Embark\, will close with information about ongoing campus climate action initiatives and ways to get involved at SFU. \nPROGRAM \nSession 1: The State of the Climate \nWednesday\, May 27th \n12pm-1pm \nDr. Kirsten Zickfeld will speak about the climate science that underpins the requirement for net zero carbon dioxide emissions to stabilize Earth’s climate. She will illustrate the atmospheric greenhouse effect\, the long permanence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the lag in the warming of the ocean\, which conspire to keep global mean temperature elevated even if human-made carbon dioxide emissions are eliminated. \nSession 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action \nWednesday\, June 3rd \n12pm-1pm \nDr. \nSession 3: Climate Action at SFU \nWednesday\, June 10th \n12pm-1pm \nIn this session\, you will hear about various climate action initiatives at SFU and opportunities to get involved. Participating groups include SFU350\, Embark’s Climate Action Team\, SFU Sustainability Office\, and PICS. \nSPEAKER BIOS \nDr. Kirsten Zickfeld is an Associate Professor in the Geography Department at Simon Fraser University. Her primary research interests are in the long-term effects of human activities on climate. She is internationally recognized for her research on the irreversibility of human-induced climate change and carbon budgets consistent with climate targets. She served as a Lead Author of the recently released IPCC Special Report of on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees and is a Lead Author of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. She has won the President’s Prize of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society and SFU President’s Prize for Leadership in Sustainability. \nDr. Mark Jaccard is a professor in SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management and was recently named an SFU Distinguished Professor. His Ph.D. is from Grenoble University. He researches the design and application of energy-economy models for assessing climate policies. He is an author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and a member of the Royal Society of Canada. Dr. Jaccard is the author of The Citizen’s Guide to Climate Success\, published in January 2020. \nACCESSIBILITY & VENUE DETAILS \nThis virtual lunch and learn will be hosted over zoom and you’ll receive the meeting room access in a separate email after registration.
