Join us with Ren from Distro Disco in this workshop where we will explore mutual aid as a practice of care\, resistance\, and collective survival—both within and beyond monetary exchange. Through discussion and hands-on collaboration\, participants will examine how mutual aid networks sustain marginalized communities in the face of systemic inequities and the climate crisis.  \nTogether\, we’ll: \n\nLearn the foundations of mutual aid: what it is\, what it isn’t\, and how it differs from charity or institutional aid.\nExplore the connections between mutual aid and climate equity\, considering how community-based redistribution and solidarity work build resilience amid environmental and social crises.\nPut together “distro” (distribution) packages for community care.\n\nLet’s connect\, imagine\, and practice the kinds of care that can carry us and our communities through crisis and change! \n  \nAGENDA \n\nWelcome & Grounding\nPresentation: What is Mutual Aid?\nGroup Activity: Distro Bag Assembly\nReflection & Discussion\nClosing & Clean-Up\n\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Land ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nRen (they/themRen is a Chinese diasporic queer and trans settler living on the unceded land of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. SUMMARY:Climate Workshop: Peasant Struggle\, Global Solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Climate Workshop: Peasant Struggle\, Global Solidarity\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Date & Time\n Tuesday\, October 7\, 20256:00PM – 7:30PM \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location\n Embark Studio (SUB 1310) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the event\nIn light of Peasants’ Month\, Embark is excited to be joined by CPSHR for a climate workshop on the resilience and struggles of peasant communities in the Philippines. Peasant farmers in the Philippines are on the frontlines of overlapping crises—climate breakdown\, systemic corruption\, land dispossession\, militarization\, and repeated violations of their basic rights. \nPeasants are a class of people in the Philippines who work on the land of a feudal landlord—not to be confused with its derogatory connotation in Western contexts.  For this month of solidarity\, join us as we immerse ourselves in the lived realities of peasants through a narrative activity and teach-in. Together\, we will connect the peasant struggle to the climate crisis and entrenched systems of corruption and land dispossession enforced by the state and backed by foreign corporations and banks. Through this collective dramatization\, participants will not only witness the resilience and struggles of peasant communities but also be given a few options to stand in solitary. The workshop will close with a way to support political prisoners in the Philippines—many of whom are peasants and peasant rights advocates—and with concrete calls-to-action to advance genuine land reform and the broader fight for national democracy.  \nPlus\, enjoy Jeff’s homemade Suman—a steamed sticky rice cake that peasants often eat.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Land ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nJeff (he/they)Jeff is an organizer with Canada-Philippines Solidarity for Human Rights (CPSHR) and regional coordinator for the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP Canada). Learn about the Canadian mining project that caused the worst mining disaster in Philippine history\, and how we can meaningfully support Indigenous land defenders locally and internationally.   \nAgenda: \n\n6:30PM – 7:00PM | Doors open & Introductions\n7:00PM – 7:30PM | Film Screening\n7:30PM – 8:00PM | Presentation on Canadian Mining and Militarization in the Philippines\n8:00PM – 9:00PM | Group Discussion & Maoj Fundraiser Prize Bid\n\nWe will also be holding a fundraiser at this event for a political prisoner’s legal defence and support CPSHR’s ongoing organizing efforts – see details below.  \nMarklen Maojo (Maoj) Maga is a Filipino union organizer and political prisoner who was arrested due to his work supporting the strikes of Jeepney drivers\, who are public transport workers in the Philippines. \nJeepney drivers were protesting against the corporate-driven\, foreign-oriented Public Transport Modernization Program\, which goes against worker’s need for decent and stable work\, livable income\, freedom of association\, and their economic and democratic rights. \nFebruary 22nd\, 2025 will be Maoj’s seven-year anniversary of incarceration\, yet he still faces unfounded charges of murder and attempted murder in locations in the Philippines which he has never visited! \nWe are raising money to fund Maoj’s basic needs while still imprisoned\, as well as his costly legal defence fees. Of the money that is raised\, 75% will go to Maoj\, and 25% will go to the ongoing organizing efforts of CPSHR as we continue to organize until Maoj\, and the hundreds of other political prisoners in the Philippines\, are finally free. \n \n\n\n \n Donate to Free Maoj\n \n \n \n \n \n Land Acknowledgement\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations.\n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nCPSHRCanadian-Philippines Solidarity for Human Rights (CPSHR) is a Vancouver-based anti-imperialist organization in support of National Democracy in the Philippines. When we recognize place names like Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten\, we are acknowledging the original histories that have been here since time immemorial\, prior to the colonization of these spaces. \nThe Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline continues to be a critical issue impacting our communities\, environment\, and future. As students and community members\, we have a role to play in shaping the response\, ensuring that voices of resistance are heard\, and building collective strategies for action. This event is a follow-up to the recent community town hall on TMX\, offering an opportunity to deepen student understanding of the project\, its ongoing effects\, and what we can do moving forward to stay prepared. We’ll explore how students can effectively organize on campus and beyond\, discuss key updates on TMX\, and share practical tools for mobilization\, advocacy\, and direct action. Whether you’re new to organizing or already involved\, this session is a space for connection\, collaboration\, and preparation. By coming together\, we can strengthen our networks\, learn from one another\, and build a more resilient movement. The conversation doesn’t end at awareness—this is about taking meaningful steps toward action. \n \n \n \n \n \n Land ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nDr. Tim Takaro (he/him)Dr. Takaro is a professor emeritus and physician-scientist in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. His research is primarily about the links between human exposures and disease\, and planetary health. With immense gratitude to the First Peoples\, he is beginning to use Indigenous knowledge to relearn environmental health as he tests different interventions in climate action and planet protection. This collaboration and the failure to stop TMX with the usual academic public health approach of education and advocacy\, Dr. Takaro led Protect the Planet into the trees to block construction\, resulting in his incarceration in June 2022. \nNatasha Ivkov (she/her)Natasha is a third-year Chemistry major and Sustainable Development minor at SFU\, and a core organizer with SFU350. She is passionate about fighting for equity in intersecting movements and has been doing community organizing since 2019. With SFU350\, she has learned a lot about TMX resistance\, and is working on advocating for proper emergency response measures to be implemented in the area surrounding the Trans Mountain Tank Farm. \n  \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the Embark Studio\, room #1310 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. Our goal is to encourage students to think more critically about what it means to approach climate equity and food justice through an intersectional lens. What are the ‘roots’ of climate inequity and food injustice\, and what are the many resulting forms of oppression that exist? \nBooks are chosen thematically by the committee in alignment with this purpose and with preference given to books written by local authors and/or authors of systemically marginalized backgrounds. \nThe Cohort will meet every Wednesday from 4:30PM to 6:30PM in the Embark Studio (SUB #1310) starting February 26\, and runs until March 25. Preference will be given to registrants who can make all 5 cohort meetings this term\, while those who cannot will be placed on a waitlist. Thank you! \n \n \n \n \n \n \nLand Acknowledgement\nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place across the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie)\, Qayqayt\, Kwantlen\, Semiahmoo\, and Tsawwassen Nations. Research of the book’s themes ahead of meeting with the cohort is also recommended. \nSummary \n(via HarperCollins) \nBarbados\, 1962. Lost soul Iapetus roams the island\, scared and alone\, driven mad after witnessing his father’s death at the hands of his mother and his older brother\, Cronus. Just before Iapetus is lost forever\, he has a son\, but the baby is not enough to save him from himself—or his family’s secrets.  \nSeventeen years later\, Iapetus’s son\, the stoic Atlas\, lives in a loveless house\, under the care of his uncle\, Cronus\, and in the shadow of his charismatic cousin Z. Knowing little about the tragic circumstances of his father’s life\, Atlas must choose between his desire to flee the island and his loyalty to the uncle who raised him. \nTime passes. Atlas’s daughter\, Calypso\, is a beautiful and wilful teenager who is desperate to avoid being trapped in a life of drudgery at her uncle Z’s hotel. When she falls dangerously in love with a visiting real estate developer\, she finds herself entangled in her uncle’s shady dealings\, a pawn in the games of the powerful men around her.  \nIt is now 2019. Calypso’s son\, Nautilus\, is on a path of self-destruction as he grapples with his fatherless condition\, his mixed-race identity and his complicated feelings of attraction towards his best friend\, Daniel. Then one night\, after making an impulsive decision\, Nautilus finds himself exiled to Canada. \nThe Island of Forgetting is an intimate saga spanning four generations of one family who run a beachfront hotel. Loosely inspired by Greek mythology\, this is a novel about the echo of deep—and sometimes tragic—love and the ways a family’s past can haunt its future. \n \nAccessing the book\nEmbark has 10 physical copies of this book available on a first-come\, first-served basis. It is otherwise the responsibility of cohort participants to source their own copies of the book by the first meeting on February 26. \nThe E-book version is available for loan at the following public libraries: \n\nBurnaby\nSurrey \nVancouver *hold only*\nRichmond \nFraser Valley\n\nPaperback versions available for loan at the following public libraries: \n\nSFU Bennett Library\nVancouver *hold only*\nRichmond\n\n \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nJasmine Sealy \nJasmine Sealy is a Barbadian-Canadian writer. Balqees is grateful to have worked with many people at SFU and across Canada on important issues affecting students like affordability\, climate justice\, anti-racism\, etc. In recognition of her national impact\, Balqees was nominated for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award this year and named one of Canada’s Top 100 Black Women to Watch in 2022 (CIBWE). \n \nMagnus Thyvold (he/him)Magnus Thyvold is the Station Manager of SFU’s Campus Community Radio Station CJSF 90.1FM. Involved with CJSF 90.1FM for decades\, Magnus was a frontline representative for the station when negotiating for space in the Student Union Building. \n \n \nWeiChun Kua (He/Him)WeiChun Kua\, 柯伟俊 (he/him) is a second-generation stateless Chinese from Brunei. As an international student at SFU\, he was deeply involved in student advocacy\, climate action\, and migrant rights. Notably\, he played a pivotal role in SFU350’s eight-long year campaign\, where they successfully campaigned SFU to divest its $650 million endowment fund from fossil fuels. After learning about the Rotunda Group’s potential eviction in 2019\, he got involved in the Save Our Spaces campaign and was later elected to the 2020-2021 SFSS Board that granted the Rotunda Groups their SUB space today. WeiChun remains active with Migrant Students United at SFU\, a grassroots group of former and current international students and workers advocating for their fair rights and currently works at Solid State Community Industries as a Coop Developer\, supporting racialized and immigrant people in Surrey building worker cooperatives and enterprises. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. This event will be held indoors in the Embark Studio\, room #1310 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. The Embark Studio is: \n\nwheelchair accessible\nwelcomes all gender identities and expressions\na tree nut and peanut-free zone\na scent-free zone\nlocated near wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral restrooms\nprovides access to a quiet space for personal meditation\, reflection\, or prayers\n\nWe aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible. SUMMARY:Bring on the Buzz! Pollinator Walk n' Talk
DESCRIPTION:You’ve likely heard\, the bees are in trouble. Due to a combination of habitat loss\, disease\, and pesticide use\, many of our pollinators are declining\, which is concerning when one out of three bites you eat is thanks to a bee! The good news is that so-called Canada has more than 800 species of native bees that contribute to pollination of both wild plants and our food supply. How well are these native bees doing? What can be done to support them? Join Dr. Elizabeth Elle for a short talk and a plant and pollinator walk. You’ll learn about the diversity of wild bees in BC\, why there are concerns about bee declines\, and what you can do in your backyard\, community garden\, or even on your balcony to help support pollinators. \n \n SECURE YOUR SPOT
