What is the Embark
Theory of Change?

The theory of change is Embark’s strategic plan for 2017-2020 guided by our vision that all SFU students actively cultivate sustainable communities both on and off campus. Our approach to sustainability advocacy can be broken down into three priority areas: Food Systems Change, Climate Action, and Social Sustainability.

Food Systems Change

As a priority area, Food Systems Change is creating dialogue around food systems. Our programming attempts to uncover students’ personal and cultural connections to food systems by promoting nutritious and sustainable food production, distribution, and access.

That’s why we run several sustainable food initiatives at SFU. We believe by intervening at the university level, we can create a wave of momentum that reverberates into surrounding communities.

Climate Action

Within our Climate Action priority area, we work to convene students and stakeholders to co-create climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies while encouraging personal commitments to responsible action.

We can proudly share that over the past several years, we’ve lobbied government, participated in the hearings, hosted dialogue-based town halls to raise awareness among students, and rallied students around public consultation opportunities.

Social Sustainability

Social Sustainability, as a priority area, is focused on advancing regenerative social processes by promoting equity, building capacity, and welcoming diverse perspectives in order to strengthen student communities.

In our first project, Student Sustainability Summit, we brought students together from all campuses and backgrounds to generate a Student Sustainability Vision for the university, to contribute to SFU’s Sustainability Strategic Plan.

Students create a safe, livable community by respecting all forms of diversity and engaging in constructive dialogue with their peers
