SUMMARY:Bring on the Buzz! Pollinator Walk n' Talk
DESCRIPTION:You’ve likely heard\, the bees are in trouble. Due to a combination of habitat loss\, disease\, and pesticide use\, many of our pollinators are declining\, which is concerning when one out of three bites you eat is thanks to a bee! The good news is that so-called Canada has more than 800 species of native bees that contribute to pollination of both wild plants and our food supply. How well are these native bees doing? What can be done to support them? Join Dr. Elizabeth Elle for a short talk and a plant and pollinator walk. You’ll learn about the diversity of wild bees in BC\, why there are concerns about bee declines\, and what you can do in your backyard\, community garden\, or even on your balcony to help support pollinators. \n \n SECURE YOUR SPOT

SUMMARY:Sustainability Career Night: Nurturing Policy for Systems Change
DESCRIPTION:Join Embark Sustainability in collaboration with CityStudio Vancouver\, the Kwantlen Student Association and the UBC Climate Hub this March for a sustainability-themed career night! This event will showcase the stories of outstanding professionals who are using their careers in policymaking to nurture systems change. The goal of this night is to give you a taste of the career opportunities that exist in the policy realm\, and how these opportunities can be leveraged to create more sustainable and equitable communities. \nThis event will consist of short presentations by three sustainability leaders who work in the public policy realm. Each speaker will discuss their journey to reach their current role\, along with barriers they overcame along the way. They will speak about how their work serves to nurture systems change towards equity\, sustainability\, and well-being for all. Speakers will also provide recommendations for participants who are looking to start their careers in sustainability. After the presentations\, each speaker will be in a Q&A breakout room where participants will have the opportunity to engage with them and ask questions. Students will have the opportunity to visit one facilitated breakout room during the evening. Finally\, the speakers will engage in a panel discussion to finish up the evening. \nRSVP required! \n \n SECURE YOUR SPOT

SUMMARY:Mush-Zoom Adobo: A Virtual Community Kitchen with your (Em)Barkada!
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegister Today \nThis February\, Community Kitchen returns to Zoom with some extra oomph! Join Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre for a guided discussion about Filipino food\, accessing cultural foods in Metro Vancouver\, and our relationships to the meals we cook\, share\, and enjoy. Together we’ll become a barkada of our very own! \nThe event will include a short presentation on Filipino food and its relationship to: \n\nFacilitator Desiree and her family\nFilipinos in the diaspora\nColonization\nCountries (and cuisines!) neighbouring the Philippines.\n\nWhether you prefer listening and learning or chatting and cooking alongside Desiree\, this is a great opportunity to reflect on the connections between food and culture. Those who would like to cook along can email programs@embarksustainability.org for grocery support of up to $20. \nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place across the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, Stó:lō\, and Tsawwassen Nations. We greatly encourage our community members to reflect on the lands they are tuning in from; learn whose lands you occupy through native-land.ca. \nAbout the facilitator: Desiree Gabriel was born and raised on the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Kwantlen\, Tssawwassen\, and Squamish nations\, in so-called Richmond\, BC. Her parents are both from the Tagalog speaking regions of the Philippines\, and typically cooked Filipino food for the family. When Desiree was 17\, she became pescatarian/plant based\, and disconnected largely from the meat intensive foods she grew up with. Nonetheless\, she was lucky enough to grow up in a diverse foodscape\, and with friends of numerous cultural backgrounds who would invite her to dinner. All of this\, alongside her education spurred her passion for food – leading her eventually into the realms of food justice\, cultural food reclamation\, and Indigenous food sovereignty. Her work at Embark Sustainability allows her to delve deeper into what food means to community and in relation to environmental/climate/social/racial justice. Her favourite local restaurants include John 3:16\, Salmon n Bannock\, Kiyabiya\, Di Reggae Cafe\, and Congee Dynasty!!

SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: For the Love of Peppers
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nAPRIL’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, April 8th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Chloe Goodison! \nChloe Goodison (she/her/hers) : An uninvited guest on Coast Salish territory\, specifically of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Kwikwetlem and Stó:lō nations\, where she lives\, works\, and plays. Chloe is currently in her first year at SFU\, studying Health Sciences. Chloe absolutely loves food\, she especially enjoys finding nutritious\, convenient\, and affordable recipes that can provide students with lots of energy. She loves nature and getting outside to go paddle-boarding and hiking around her own community in Port Moody\, B.C.! \nToday’s recipe is a nutritious\, wholesome and convenient dish for Chloe and her family. With lifelong involvement in sports\, stuffed peppers have always been a good dish to consume between practices. This recipe is also simple and quick to make after a long day of studying. Each recipe in Chloe’s home\, including this one\, has memories with friends and family attached to it. Stuffed peppers are a very flexible and adaptable dish! You could make it fully plant-based\, or\, if you eat dairy\, you can easily add cheese to it! Chloe believes that adopting plant-based diets is a slow process\, and there are steps along the way for everyone to land on and enjoy. \n  \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. Hear about fellow students who are working on climate action and climate justice on campus\, and join them for an “Ask Me Anything” Instagram Q/A Takeover. \nEmbark’s Climate Action team is inviting fellow students to take over Embark’s Instagram for one day and explore different ways in which individuals are tackling climate change with an intersectional and interdisciplinary lens. \nFebruary 12th\, 2021 with Iulia Zgreabăn\nTopic: Student climate activism at SFU and pivoting during the pandemic \nIulia Zgreabăn is a fourth-year Political Science Honours student at Simon Fraser University\, concentrating in Diversity & Migration. SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: An evening of Mango-nificense
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students. \nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nFEBRUARY’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, February 11th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Lofty! \nLofty : I’m an international student from Guinea studying political science at Simon Fraser University. After living here for a few years now\, one of the many things I appreciate about Vancouver is its culinary diversity. Like many people\, I love eating; there is nothing better than knowing you can find a little bit of everything from everywhere here. In Africa\, We pride ourselves in the tastefulness of our organic fruits and vegetables. If there is one fruit that we have in abundance in Guinée\, it is mango\, especially found during the monsoon seasons. Since Guinean cuisine is all about stews\, a dish incorporating mango was bound to happen. The dish I’m going to share with you guys is Mango Stew. \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org\, by Tuesday February 9th at 12pm. SUMMARY:Sustainability Career Night - Equity in Sustianability
DESCRIPTION:Embark Sustainability will be hosting a sustainability-themed career night in collaboration with CityStudio Vancouver\, Kwantlen Student Association and UBC Climate Hub this November\, and we would love for you to join us. The event will showcase the stories of outstanding professionals working in sustainability\, looking at how we can integrate equity into different sustainability career paths. The goal is to give students a taste of the types of sustainability career opportunities that exist. \n  \nThe Sustainability Career Night event will consist of fast-paced presentations by a handful of sustainability leaders who work in a range of organizations in Metro Vancouver. Each speaker will discuss their journey to reach their current role\, along with barriers they overcame along the way. There will then be an opportunity for students to talk to the presenters to have their questions addressed more thoroughly and in-depth. \n  \nRSVP required! \n  \nCareer Night is an opportunity for students from SFU\, UBC\, KPU & CityStudio Alumni (SFU\, UBC\, Langara\, Emily Carr\, BCIT) to learn from professionals championing sustainability in various fields. \n  \nAGENDA \nShort presentations and storytelling by speakers\, followed by smaller breakout rooms. \nMore Details TBA \n  \nSPEAKERS \nAnuradha Rao is a conservation biologist\, writer and facilitator born and raised in the traditional territories of the Anishinabewaki\, Attiwonderonk and Haudenosaunee Nations (Dundas\, Ontario) and currently based in the traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ First Nations. SUMMARY:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action - Climate Literacy 101: On a Path to Climate Success
DESCRIPTION:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action \nWednesday\, June 3rd \n12pm-1pm \nDr. Mark Jaccard will speak on how climate-concerned citizens can overcome myths that hinder us from acting in time to prevent extreme climate impacts. Their actions can involve personal consumption choices (electric vehicles\, heat pumps) but these only have an effect if citizens are also engaged in the political process and civil society to elect and support climate-sincere politicians. These personal and collective efforts must align with and foster a global strategy of decarbonization\, especially in developing countries. Come to the talk to find out what is required on a simple path to climate success and what you can contribute. \n  \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a Virtual Lunch & Learn Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAre you an SFU student\, faculty member\, or staff climate champion committed to growing your understanding of climate science and pathways for change? \nClimate Literacy 101 is an opportunity to learn from and engage with leading climate science and policy experts at Simon Fraser University.
