This workshop is designed to provide a safe space for participants to process the weight of environmental distress through the powerful art of poetry. Whether you are an experienced writer or a first-time poet\, you’ll have the opportunity to craft verses that help you cope with eco-grief and its emotional toll. \nThe facilitator will guide participants through thought-provoking prompts related to climate equity\, environmental justice\, and personal healing. You are welcome to bring a poem in progress or create something new. \nAt the end of the session\, you will be invited to share your work in an open\, supportive atmosphere. The small\, informal “stage” will offer a platform to voice your feelings and reflections\, creating a collective space for healing through words. Whether you choose to share or simply listen\, this workshop is an opportunity to connect with others who understand the emotional complexities of living in an era of climate change. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n Land Acknowledgement\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations.\n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nAtena (they/them)Atena is an Iranian settler studying political science with an interest in law and social justice. She cut her teeth in organizing during her time living in K’jipuktuk (Halifax) with Divest Dal\, a fossil fuel divestment campaign at Dalhousie University\, and in the decade since\, has been a part of dozens climate and social justice campaigns. She led distributed\, base-building organizing across Atlantic Canada that pushed dozens of municipalities in the region to recognize the Right to a Healthy Environment. She spent 7 years with the 350.org Canada team to build people-power to confront the power of the fossil fuel industry and to build public support for Green New Deal scale ambition to tackle the climate crisis. She has trained hundreds of organizers through Olivia Chow’s Institute for Change Leaders\, and was a part of the core organizing team who had Joel Harden\, MPP for Ottawa Centre\, first elected. She now works for the David Suzuki Foundation’s Climate Team\, working to grow support for climate-saving clean energy that leaves no one behind. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her dogs\, in nature\, or tending to her chickens and her garden on her hobby farm. \n \nSamantha Myran\, Lawyer – West Coast Environmental Law \nSam Myran (she/her/ikwe) was born in Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, and is from Giinooshkoodeyang\, now known as Long Plain First Nation in southern Manitoba. Following that winter\, Samantha returned to post-secondary studies to earn an Associate of Arts in Aboriginal Studies from Langara College\, a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations and Indigenous Studies from the University of British Columbia\, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Manitoba. During her academic career\, Samantha became a member of many student groups including the Alliance of British Columbia Students through her role with the Langara Students Union as the Aboriginal Students Advisor\, the Langara Aboriginal Students Association\, and the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association. In community she has been a part of planning such events as elders’ trips\, an Aboriginal Veteran’s Day Pow Wow\, and family days in the Central Park of Winnipeg. Earlier in her career\, Paige worked in public libraries and completed her master’s degree in Gender and Social Justice. But after a period of climate despair and depression\, she found a home in climate movement. She first cut her teeth organizing sit-ins\, marches\, and blockades in support of land-based resistance movements\, and later campaigning for free public transit as a climate and racial justice intervention. Once upon a time\, she even ran for federal office with a campaign for a just transition to 100% renewables. As Dogwood’s Organizing Manager\, Paige is hard at work building grassroots power in the Lower Mainland toward bold climate action. I am a part of the First Nation of Turtle Island\, adirect descendant of the Lakota Sioux with an ancestry of Anishnabe and Lakota origin. \nBorn to a family of 20\, my siblings have said that I have always been a good cook\, so I thought it was important to follow my passion\, I took up the Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College in January of 2008. During this time\, I was able to garner many scholarships and awards including the very prestigious Student of the Year Award. I graduated top of my class and I followed that up by getting my hospitality management degree with a red seal certification from VCC. Even before I graduated the program\, I was invited to teach in the Aboriginal Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College where I have become a full-time faculty member for the past 12 years. \nI have always advocated that “Food is Medicine” and it is armed with this firm belief that I have started my own catering company – Cedar Feast House Catering\, Ltd. in 2011 to honor my mother Shirley Contois who is the last aboriginal princess of our tribe. My goal is to combine traditional aboriginal cooking with modern culinary techniques. \nWhat started as a small kitchen with one employee has turned into a bustling business with thirty employees. We are a 100% Indigenous owned catering company that has been operating since 2011. Our company primarily employs people with disabilities\, women who need second chances\, single mothers and Indigenous people. \nMy future plans include passing on knowledge to the next generation by training Indigenous youths and students with disabilities to give them both Culinary and cultural understanding of the people of Turtle Island. \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors in room #4200 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. My name is Zaena\, and I am the new Programs Manager for Embark Sustainability! I’m recently graduated from SFU as a Philosophy and International Studies Major. I was raised on the unceded traditional territories of the Kwikwetlem nation\, which resides in shared territories of the Musquem\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Sto’:lo\, and Katzi nations – or\, what is Colonially known as “Coquitlam”. \nThere’s a lot of new beginnings for me – A new school year\, Ethiopian New Years has just passed\, and I’m new to Embark! Newness often feels like a sudden and uncomfortable break in what we know. But when I think of newness\, I also think of how cultural traditions transform to create new twists\, giving us throughlines to the past and present. \nFood is often at this epicentre of these throughlines. It carries on the traditions of our ancestors\, while adapting to its new environments. This cultural fluidity reminds me that newness has a cushion of the familiar underneath – which is almost as comforting a thought as eating some delicious Ethiopian meals. \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby.
