May Community Kitchen

May Community Kitchen

In collaboration with the SFSS Women’s Centre, we will have the honor of co-facilitating the May Community Kitchen with Zoila Ramirez Sales, Aj Q’ij—a Maya Spiritual leader, a traditional weaver, and a political refugee from Guatemala.  She will share with us recipes from her land and stories from her life.

Zoila Ramirez Sales, Aj Q’ij - A Maya Spiritual leader, is a Maya woman, traditional weaver, and a political refugee from Guatemala, Central America. She left her homeland in 1982 due to the civil war and the mass killing of the Mayan people. Thirty years ago, after a long and difficult journey, Nana Zoila arrived in Vancouver, Canada, with her family and has been living there since.

She has developed the art of using traditional ingredients to survive. Her teachings also include the understanding and interconnection of Mayan cosmology to awaken ourselves from a deep sleep of materialization. She has facilitated workshops about Mayan philosophy through ceremonies and by using the sophisticated Mayan calendar. Nana Zoila has been invited as a facilitator at various venues, including the Royal Ontario Museum and the Linguistic Department at SFU, to share her knowledge about the Mam language and her backstrap loom.

This event is being hosted on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. In particular, this includes the land of the Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam, Skwxwú7mesh, and Kwikwetlem nations where we work, live, and play.
The Women’s Centre has opened up their lounge (TC 3013) to all genders for this Community Kitchen. The Women's Centre is wheelchair accessible.
