Position summary

Work Term: August 25, 2016 – April 30, 2017

Direct Supervisor: Program Manager, with assistance from the Executive Director

Hours of Work: Averaging 5-7 hours per week, for a minimum of 80 hours semester

Honouraria: $800 stipend per semester after completing at least 80 hours of service

The Design Coordinator will: 

Work with volunteer project groups

  • Work closely with all Sustainability Peer project teams

  • Meet with Embark staff as well as small groups of students to discuss the needs of their projects and ongoing campaigns

  • Create design materials according to project needs (materials may include, but are not limited to posters for print, e-posters, Facebook profile and cover images, handouts)*

  • Create opportunities for students to learn about design, and delegate design tasks to volunteers where appropriate and where time permits

  • Craft poster templates of various formats that can be used for future programming

*This requires a familiarity with the Embark Design and Branding Guidelines, which you are expected to acquire prior to the beginning of the term

Accountability and Reporting

  • Keep records of the design material created for Embark’s programs  

  • Provide a summary of impact and activities for our Annual Report

Important Dates

  • Sustainability Peer Ed Training: August 31st 1-5pm

  • Team Meetings:

    • September: Wednesday’s 4:30-6:30pm

    • October- December: bi-weekly Wednesday’s 4:30-6:30pm

    • Occasional ad-hoc meetings/events

 Ideal candidates are:

  • Passionate about working with a student- and learning-oriented organization, and contributing design abilities to the projects

  • Experienced in graphic design and photo editing

  • Experienced with working with Adobe Indesign and/or Illustrator

  • Comfortable following branding requirements when creating designs

  • Personable, friendly, and able to work with teams of student volunteers

  • Creative, resourceful, and collaborative

  • Excellent time managers, capable of balancing academic and volunteer commitments

  • Current students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at Simon Fraser University


  • Contribute your time and skills to shaping a sustainable future at SFU while developing your abilities as a leader and mentor

  • Collaborate with staff and students to create novel designs that can be added to your design portfolio

  • Gain experience with project development, influencing how projects are presented and communicated to the SFU community

  • Network with sustainability-related professionals and organizations in Vancouver, Surrey and Burnaby

  • Receive a letter of recommendation upon completion of assigned responsibilities
