Through their unique perspectives\, facilitators Kil Daagwiiya and James Houle will lead a flavour-packed conversation about Indigenous language vitalization and its role within food justice. Ancestral languages carry important knowledge of land\, seasonality\, and traditional foodways\, which has been essential to nourishing communities for generations. Come out to enjoy a meal as we learn about the powerful connection between land\, food\, and language while celebrating Indigenous cultures! \nWe’ll be making: \n\nIndian Tacos (Frybread and Seasoned Meat)\nJum (Halibut Stew)\n\nPlease be mindful of dietary restrictions – all recipes contain meat or fish product. \nAGENDA \n\nIntroductions and Housekeeping \nCooking\, Games and Colouring \nEating and Discussion \nWrap-up and Clean-up\n\nWhether you’re a seasoned chef or new to the kitchen\, all are welcome! Thanks and see you there!✨ \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Land Acknowledgement\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations.\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nKil Daagwiiya Hooper (She/They)Kil Daagwiiya is in her third-year studying Political Science and Indigenous Studies and currently holds a Indigenous Language Certificate in Xaad Kil (Haida). She believes that  sharing meals together is an important way of getting to know each other and building community\, which is an essential first step in the journey to revitalize Indigenous languages.  \n \nJames Houle (He/Him) (Tanisi!) James is a graduate student in the Math program and the treasurer at FNMISA. He is excited to support his co-facilitator\, Kil Daagwiiya in exploring the relationship between language revitalization and food justice at this upcoming Community Kitchen. \n \nFNMISA The First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit Student Association (FNMISA) is an Indigenous student-run group within the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS). The group provides a variety of supports and resources to First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit (FNMI) students\, including support and preservation of the various cultural diversities of FNMI peoples\, advocacy for services and resources necessary for FNMI students to succeed at Simon Fraser University (SFU)\, promoting awareness of FNMI cultures and issues to the SFU Community. Accessibility details include: \n\nAttendees are free to opt in and opt out of activities as suits their needs throughout the event\, including exiting and re-entering the event space.\nSome appliances and counter areas of this room are not accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids. The dining/lounge area is accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids.\nWe aim to host a scent-free space. Please refrain from wearing scented products in attendance of this event.\nUnfortunately\, we cannot provide ASL interpretation at this time.
