SUMMARY:Catalyst Cafe: Unleash Climate Curiosity with Embark Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Getting involved in climate action can feel like a lot to take on at once. But\, if you’re looking to dip your toes in\, then join us in embarking on a journey to feeling more comfortable talking about our climate. Whether you’re a new student or well acquainted with the SFU campus we’re creating space for new relationships to take form. During one afternoon you’ll explore various avenues to begin your climate activism journey with Embark Sustainability as we together discover: \n\nour changing climate\, food production\, and how they relate – directly from our learning gardens\nyour strengths in social movement\nthe importance of community building\nwhat the concept of food justice entails while creating meals together\n\nDon’t miss an opportunity to meet folks curious about our climate and get to know Embark Sustainability. Register now and pass the information forward to someone who also might be interested. \nAGENDA \n4:00 pm – Meet at the Embark Studio \n5:00 pm – Gardens tour\, learn about starting your gardening journey \n5:30 pm – Community Kitchen\, create food with your fellow attendees \n6:30 pm – Social Movements Workshop\, learn how to play to your strengths in movements \n7:30 pm – Bye bye new friends! \n  \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nThis event will take place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. Unceded means that this land was never surrendered\, transferred or relinquished in any way and\, as such\, the land remains sovereign Indigenous territory. My name is Zaena\, and I am the new Programs Manager for Embark Sustainability! I’m recently graduated from SFU as a Philosophy and International Studies Major. I was raised on the unceded traditional territories of the Kwikwetlem nation\, which resides in shared territories of the Musquem\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Sto’:lo\, and Katzi nations – or\, what is Colonially known as “Coquitlam”. \nThere’s a lot of new beginnings for me – A new school year\, Ethiopian New Years has just passed\, and I’m new to Embark! Newness often feels like a sudden and uncomfortable break in what we know. But when I think of newness\, I also think of how cultural traditions transform to create new twists\, giving us throughlines to the past and present. \nFood is often at this epicentre of these throughlines. It carries on the traditions of our ancestors\, while adapting to its new environments. This cultural fluidity reminds me that newness has a cushion of the familiar underneath – which is almost as comforting a thought as eating some delicious Ethiopian meals. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby.
