Through various leadership capacities in SFSS\, SFPIRG\, and SOCA\, Balqees organized against the eviction of marginalized community groups to successfully retain their spaces\, now located in the SUB. She co-led campaigns for other milestone achievements at SFU such as: cluster-hiring of Black and Indigenous faculty\, institutionalizing more equitable Health & Counseling services\, establishing the SFU VP People\, Equity\, & Inclusion office\, and more. Balqees is grateful to have worked with many people at SFU and across Canada on important issues affecting students like affordability\, climate justice\, anti-racism\, etc. In recognition of her national impact\, Balqees was nominated for the YWCA Women of Distinction Award this year and named one of Canada’s Top 100 Black Women to Watch in 2022 (CIBWE). \n \nMagnus Thyvold (he/him)Magnus Thyvold is the Station Manager of SFU’s Campus Community Radio Station CJSF 90.1FM. After learning about the Rotunda Group’s potential eviction in 2019\, he got involved in the Save Our Spaces campaign and was later elected to the 2020-2021 SFSS Board that granted the Rotunda Groups their SUB space today. WeiChun remains active with Migrant Students United at SFU\, a grassroots group of former and current international students and workers advocating for their fair rights and currently works at Solid State Community Industries as a Coop Developer\, supporting racialized and immigrant people in Surrey building worker cooperatives and enterprises. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. This event will be held indoors in the Embark Studio\, room #1310 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. The Embark Studio is: \n\nwheelchair accessible\nwelcomes all gender identities and expressions\na tree nut and peanut-free zone\na scent-free zone\nlocated near wheelchair accessible and gender-neutral restrooms\nprovides access to a quiet space for personal meditation\, reflection\, or prayers\n\nWe aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible. Sakura flowers and plum blossoms are infused in desserts while savory food like sushi and bento are common as they are easy to pack and share for picnics.  \nTaste the flavors of Hanami as our facilitator\, Ella Oriye Tani\, walks you through how to make the following foods (vegan and gluten free options are available): \n\nSakura Mochi (A rice-bean paste dessert with syrup)\nNerikiri Wagashi (chewy dessert with white bean paste)\nFutomaki Sushi (sushi with egg\, mushroom\, spinach\, and cucumber)\n\nSpots are limited so register now to secure your place! \n \n \n \n \n \n Land Acknowledgement\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations.\n \n \n \n \n \n About the facilitators\nElla Oriye Tani \nElla is a visual artist currently in her 2nd year at SFU School of Contemporary arts. She led distributed\, base-building organizing across Atlantic Canada that pushed dozens of municipalities in the region to recognize the Right to a Healthy Environment. She spent 7 years with the 350.org Canada team to build people-power to confront the power of the fossil fuel industry and to build public support for Green New Deal scale ambition to tackle the climate crisis. She has trained hundreds of organizers through Olivia Chow’s Institute for Change Leaders\, and was a part of the core organizing team who had Joel Harden\, MPP for Ottawa Centre\, first elected. She now works for the David Suzuki Foundation’s Climate Team\, working to grow support for climate-saving clean energy that leaves no one behind. Following that winter\, Samantha returned to post-secondary studies to earn an Associate of Arts in Aboriginal Studies from Langara College\, a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations and Indigenous Studies from the University of British Columbia\, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Manitoba. During her academic career\, Samantha became a member of many student groups including the Alliance of British Columbia Students through her role with the Langara Students Union as the Aboriginal Students Advisor\, the Langara Aboriginal Students Association\, and the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association. In community she has been a part of planning such events as elders’ trips\, an Aboriginal Veteran’s Day Pow Wow\, and family days in the Central Park of Winnipeg. Earlier in her career\, Paige worked in public libraries and completed her master’s degree in Gender and Social Justice. But after a period of climate despair and depression\, she found a home in climate movement. Once upon a time\, she even ran for federal office with a campaign for a just transition to 100% renewables. I am a part of the First Nation of Turtle Island\, adirect descendant of the Lakota Sioux with an ancestry of Anishnabe and Lakota origin. \nBorn to a family of 20\, my siblings have said that I have always been a good cook\, so I thought it was important to follow my passion\, I took up the Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College in January of 2008. During this time\, I was able to garner many scholarships and awards including the very prestigious Student of the Year Award. I graduated top of my class and I followed that up by getting my hospitality management degree with a red seal certification from VCC. Even before I graduated the program\, I was invited to teach in the Aboriginal Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College where I have become a full-time faculty member for the past 12 years. \nI have always advocated that “Food is Medicine” and it is armed with this firm belief that I have started my own catering company – Cedar Feast House Catering\, Ltd. in 2011 to honor my mother Shirley Contois who is the last aboriginal princess of our tribe. My goal is to combine traditional aboriginal cooking with modern culinary techniques. \nWhat started as a small kitchen with one employee has turned into a bustling business with thirty employees. We are a 100% Indigenous owned catering company that has been operating since 2011. Our company primarily employs people with disabilities\, women who need second chances\, single mothers and Indigenous people. \nMy future plans include passing on knowledge to the next generation by training Indigenous youths and students with disabilities to give them both Culinary and cultural understanding of the people of Turtle Island. \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors in room #4200 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. But for many\, needing substitutions and accommodations for our food can make us feel embarrassed\, burdensome or picky. This February\, SFU SVSPO\, SFU DNA\, Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre are teaming up to discover how a community of care can adapt to fit people’s differing needs\, abilities and circumstances\, and explore adaptation as a joyful part of cooking that allows us to unlock new possibilities and create fulfilling meals! \nFor this event\, we’ll be exploring how to make tabbouleh or marinara sauce\, two recipes which make very different use of tomato\, onion and garlic. We’ll take time to think about the versatility of these ingredients\, and how adaptable we can be with our food. \nMembers of all gender identities and expressions are welcome 🙂 This event is first come first serve until we reach capacity\, so we encourage you to arrive on time and register to get reminders and updates\, share any access needs\, and give us a better sense of numbers.
