Through their unique perspectives\, facilitators Kil Daagwiiya and James Houle will lead a flavour-packed conversation about Indigenous language vitalization and its role within food justice. Ancestral languages carry important knowledge of land\, seasonality\, and traditional foodways\, which has been essential to nourishing communities for generations. She believes that  sharing meals together is an important way of getting to know each other and building community\, which is an essential first step in the journey to revitalize Indigenous languages.  \n \nJames Houle (He/Him) (Tanisi!) James is a graduate student in the Math program and the treasurer at FNMISA. He is excited to support his co-facilitator\, Kil Daagwiiya in exploring the relationship between language revitalization and food justice at this upcoming Community Kitchen. \n \nFNMISA The First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit Student Association (FNMISA) is an Indigenous student-run group within the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS). The group provides a variety of supports and resources to First Nations\, Métis\, and Inuit (FNMI) students\, including support and preservation of the various cultural diversities of FNMI peoples\, advocacy for services and resources necessary for FNMI students to succeed at Simon Fraser University (SFU)\, promoting awareness of FNMI cultures and issues to the SFU Community. Learn about the Canadian mining project that caused the worst mining disaster in Philippine history\, and how we can meaningfully support Indigenous land defenders locally and internationally.   \nAgenda: \n\n6:30PM – 7:00PM | Doors open & Introductions\n7:00PM – 7:30PM | Film Screening\n7:30PM – 8:00PM | Presentation on Canadian Mining and Militarization in the Philippines\n8:00PM – 9:00PM | Group Discussion & Maoj Fundraiser Prize Bid\n\nWe will also be holding a fundraiser at this event for a political prisoner’s legal defence and support CPSHR’s ongoing organizing efforts – see details below.  \nMarklen Maojo (Maoj) Maga is a Filipino union organizer and political prisoner who was arrested due to his work supporting the strikes of Jeepney drivers\, who are public transport workers in the Philippines. \nJeepney drivers were protesting against the corporate-driven\, foreign-oriented Public Transport Modernization Program\, which goes against worker’s need for decent and stable work\, livable income\, freedom of association\, and their economic and democratic rights. \nFebruary 22nd\, 2025 will be Maoj’s seven-year anniversary of incarceration\, yet he still faces unfounded charges of murder and attempted murder in locations in the Philippines which he has never visited! \nWe are raising money to fund Maoj’s basic needs while still imprisoned\, as well as his costly legal defence fees. When we recognize place names like Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten\, we are acknowledging the original histories that have been here since time immemorial\, prior to the colonization of these spaces. \nThe Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline continues to be a critical issue impacting our communities\, environment\, and future. As students and community members\, we have a role to play in shaping the response\, ensuring that voices of resistance are heard\, and building collective strategies for action. This event is a follow-up to the recent community town hall on TMX\, offering an opportunity to deepen student understanding of the project\, its ongoing effects\, and what we can do moving forward to stay prepared. We’ll explore how students can effectively organize on campus and beyond\, discuss key updates on TMX\, and share practical tools for mobilization\, advocacy\, and direct action. Whether you’re new to organizing or already involved\, this session is a space for connection\, collaboration\, and preparation. By coming together\, we can strengthen our networks\, learn from one another\, and build a more resilient movement. This collaboration and the failure to stop TMX with the usual academic public health approach of education and advocacy\, Dr. Takaro led Protect the Planet into the trees to block construction\, resulting in his incarceration in June 2022. \nNatasha Ivkov (she/her)Natasha is a third-year Chemistry major and Sustainable Development minor at SFU\, and a core organizer with SFU350. She is passionate about fighting for equity in intersecting movements and has been doing community organizing since 2019. Leona gained three years of training in Land and Lives around Indigenous Culture with the Resurfacing History Program coordinated by Jolene Andrew. This work has become Leona’s Healing Journey\, the grassroots teachings and knowledge is shared with her children as it is important to know who we are and where we come from and how we live in with the Lands and Waterways around us.As a Gitxsan Refugee in the unceded territories of Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh\, Leona has been taking on land based work here in the city and thrive as a great ambassador to the work Resurfacing History has taught her around Indigenous food and resources that we harvest in the city. Leona advocates at every opportunity with School Boards\, City of Vancouver\, and Vancouver Parks Board for all opportunities for Indigenous People to relearn our culture on the lands and waterways that we live on and actively talk of Reconciliation. \n  \nPablo Vimos (he/him)Pablo is an organic master gardener with a degree in Landscape Ecology. He has been managing Embark gardens for a decade\, facilitating hands-on activities on how to grow food\, plant and maintain gardening beds\, and build wildlife habitats. He loves sharing his knowledge to help others start their gardening journey. \nVancouver Food Justice Coalition The Vancouver Food Justice Coalition formed to create space for community-based organizations and those with lived and living experience to join forces and engage in meaningful policy and systems change work. Our goal is to encourage students to think more critically about what it means to approach climate equity and food justice through an intersectional lens. What are the ‘roots’ of climate inequity and food injustice\, and what are the many resulting forms of oppression that exist?  \nBooks are chosen thematically by the committee in alignment with this purpose and with preference given to books written by local authors and/or authors of systemically marginalized backgrounds. \nThe Cohort will meet every Wednesday from 4:30PM to 6:30PM in the Embark Studio (SUB #1310) starting February 26\, and runs until March 25. Our goal is to encourage students to think more critically about what it means to approach climate equity and food justice through an intersectional lens. What are the ‘roots’ of climate inequity and food injustice\, and what are the many resulting forms of oppression that exist?  \nBooks are chosen thematically by the committee in alignment with this purpose and with preference given to books written by local authors and/or authors of systemically marginalized backgrounds. \nThe Cohort will meet every Wednesday from 4:30PM to 6:30PM in the Embark Studio (SUB #1310) starting February 26\, and runs until March 25. Having supported small\, local farmers and buying from roadside markets in Kenya\, Stacy now brings that same love for sustainable and local ingredients to Vancouver while preserving the traditions that shape who they are today. They love recreating childhood meals and experimenting with new recipes inspired by her cultural roots.  \nThis Black History Month\, Stacy aims to inspire others to embrace home-cooked meals—not just for health\, but for the stories and heritage they bring. Through this community kitchen\, they hope to create a space where food brings people together to share\, learn\, and celebrate the flavors that shape us. \nMekeil WilsonMekeil is a third-year Sociology major and currently serves as an Executive-at-Large for SOCA. Being born and raised in Jamaica has taught them the importance of food in a building community. Growing up\, their family was deeply involved in farming and poultry raising. Mekeil was encouraged to cultivate seasonal fruits and vegetables in their backyard\, which fostered a deep understanding of food’s importance. Visits to local markets further strengthened their bond with fresh\, locally-grown produce. These experiences shaped their belief that food is a fundamental right—one that should be nutritious\, accessible\, and life-sustaining.  \nMoving to Canada deepened Mekeil’s passion for food justice and the importance of equitable access to healthy\, culturally diverse food. Their favorite Jamaican dish is curry goat\, and they’re also a fan of cheesecake! Our goal is to encourage students to think more critically about what it means to approach climate equity and food justice through an intersectional lens. What are the ‘roots’ of climate inequity and food injustice\, and what are the many resulting forms of oppression that exist?  \nBooks are chosen thematically by the committee in alignment with this purpose and with preference given to books written by local authors and/or authors of systemically marginalized backgrounds. \nThe Cohort will meet every Wednesday from 4:30PM to 6:30PM in the Embark Studio (SUB #1310) starting February 26\, and runs until March 25. Preference will be given to registrants who can make all 5 cohort meetings this term\, while those who cannot will be placed on a waitlist. We greatly encourage our community members to reflect on the lands they are tuning in from; learn whose lands you occupy through native-land.ca. \n  \nBook selection\nIn celebration of Black History Month\, the Spring Cohort will be reading “The Island of Forgetting” by Jasmine Sealy. \nThemes: Black love\, Black grief\, Colonialism\, generational trauma\, Queerness \nContent Warnings: This book features depictions of family death and Black death.  \n*** We recommend cohort participants with personal triggers to certain content share this in the registration form\, and how we can accommodate accessibility needs relative to this. Research of the book’s themes ahead of meeting with the cohort is also recommended.  \nSummary \n(via HarperCollins)  \nBarbados\, 1962. Lost soul Iapetus roams the island\, scared and alone\, driven mad after witnessing his father’s death at the hands of his mother and his older brother\, Cronus. Just before Iapetus is lost forever\, he has a son\, but the baby is not enough to save him from himself—or his family’s secrets.  \nSeventeen years later\, Iapetus’s son\, the stoic Atlas\, lives in a loveless house\, under the care of his uncle\, Cronus\, and in the shadow of his charismatic cousin Z.
