I am a part of the First Nation of Turtle Island\, adirect descendant of the Lakota Sioux with an ancestry of Anishnabe and Lakota origin. \nBorn to a family of 20\, my siblings have said that I have always been a good cook\, so I thought it was important to follow my passion\, I took up the Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College in January of 2008. During this time\, I was able to garner many scholarships and awards including the very prestigious Student of the Year Award. I graduated top of my class and I followed that up by getting my hospitality management degree with a red seal certification from VCC. Even before I graduated the program\, I was invited to teach in the Aboriginal Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College where I have become a full-time faculty member for the past 12 years. \nI have always advocated that “Food is Medicine” and it is armed with this firm belief that I have started my own catering company – Cedar Feast House Catering\, Ltd. in 2011 to honor my mother Shirley Contois who is the last aboriginal princess of our tribe. My goal is to combine traditional aboriginal cooking with modern culinary techniques. \nWhat started as a small kitchen with one employee has turned into a bustling business with thirty employees. We are a 100% Indigenous owned catering company that has been operating since 2011. Our company primarily employs people with disabilities\, women who need second chances\, single mothers and Indigenous people. \nMy future plans include passing on knowledge to the next generation by training Indigenous youths and students with disabilities to give them both Culinary and cultural understanding of the people of Turtle Island. \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors in room #4200 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. But for many\, needing substitutions and accommodations for our food can make us feel embarrassed\, burdensome or picky. This February\, SFU SVSPO\, SFU DNA\, Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre are teaming up to discover how a community of care can adapt to fit people’s differing needs\, abilities and circumstances\, and explore adaptation as a joyful part of cooking that allows us to unlock new possibilities and create fulfilling meals! \nFor this event\, we’ll be exploring how to make tabbouleh or marinara sauce\, two recipes which make very different use of tomato\, onion and garlic. We’ll take time to think about the versatility of these ingredients\, and how adaptable we can be with our food. \nMembers of all gender identities and expressions are welcome 🙂 This event is first come first serve until we reach capacity\, so we encourage you to arrive on time and register to get reminders and updates\, share any access needs\, and give us a better sense of numbers. She will bring us into a new exploration of Latin American flavours while co-creating recipes for change to ignite caring communities. Paola has been cooking since an early age\, and at one moment she considered becoming a chef. She celebrates life and the Doña’s (matriarchs) who have taught her unforgettable and tasty recipes. \n \nBrianna Price \nBrianna Price is the Accessibility Coordinator for the Disability and Neurodiversity Alliance. She has been a picky eater all her life\, and cooking with other neurodivergent people has been a way for her to start respecting these needs. Now\, she loves to make food comfortable and accessible for people\, and hopes to make the process of trying new things feel safe and enjoyable\, no matter one’s needs. \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. My name is Marie and I’m part of your Food Justice Team and I’m an amateur gardener at the Embark Learning Garden. \nI’m so excited for our community kitchen coming up soon\, as an Indigenous Copt Egyptian\, food has taken many forms and reminds me of resistance. Despite the foreign influences by the Greeks\, Romans\, Persians\, Ottomans\, and French\, among others\, Egyptian cuisine has managed to maintain its unique identity and authenticity. Egyptian food is not just about nourishing the body but also the soul while bringing people together. \nAs we gather together\, we’ll be experiencing all these fusions and influence in our dishes\, but the one thing I want you to remember is\, food is power\, our ability to commune around Egyptian foods highlights that our existence as Indigenous peoples is still present\, and strong. \nFun Fact: In Egypt\, tea is called “shai”. A vital part of daily life and folk etiquette in Egypt. A visit to anyone of any socioeconomic level entails a compulsory cup of tea. A nickname for tea in Egypt is “duty”\, as serving tea to a visitor is considered a duty\, while anything beyond is a nicety. Speakers will also provide recommendations for participants who are looking to start their careers in sustainability.  \nAfter the presentations\, each speaker will be in a Q&A breakout room where participants will have the opportunity to engage with them and ask questions. My name is Zaena\, and I am the new Programs Manager for Embark Sustainability! I’m recently graduated from SFU as a Philosophy and International Studies Major. I was raised on the unceded traditional territories of the Kwikwetlem nation\, which resides in shared territories of the Musquem\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Sto’:lo\, and Katzi nations – or\, what is Colonially known as “Coquitlam”. \nThere’s a lot of new beginnings for me – A new school year\, Ethiopian New Years has just passed\, and I’m new to Embark! Newness often feels like a sudden and uncomfortable break in what we know. But when I think of newness\, I also think of how cultural traditions transform to create new twists\, giving us throughlines to the past and present. \nFood is often at this epicentre of these throughlines. It carries on the traditions of our ancestors\, while adapting to its new environments. This cultural fluidity reminds me that newness has a cushion of the familiar underneath – which is almost as comforting a thought as eating some delicious Ethiopian meals. I’m a Health Sciences student and a Food Justice Facilitator at Embark Sustainability. \nI was born and raised in Bénin republic for most of my childhood but I have lived in several other countries including Ethiopia and Ghana. As such\, I am particularly interested in this Community Kitchen as we explore meals we share commonly in Western Africa\, alongside my co-host. We have all sorts of variety of food depending on the region. However\, what brings us all together is the love that we put in when making meals. Cooking for others symbolizes how much we appreciate\, hence I hope to pass this message across my food as well. I also enjoy cooking home meals to remind myself where I am from and in hopes of making others appreciate my culture too. \n  \nEVENT ACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. I am a Health Sciences student\, and the current Hi-FIVE (Movement for Mental Health) Coordinator. \nI am from Iran\, and in our culture\, just like many other cultures\, food is a way of connecting back to ourselves and our communities. \nThere are many different ways in which food and mental well-being are interconnected. Our level of mental well-being can impact our eating patterns and vice versa. That is briefly why I am passionate about addressing this topic further\, and I look forward to hearing others’ experiences and perspectives as well. \nJamie Hill\, Embark Design and Communications Manager \nHi everyone\, my name is Jamie (she/they) and I’m a settler living on the ancestral homelands of the Qayqayt and Musqueam Nations\, otherwise known as New West. \nI have a passion for environmental communication\, exploring the intersections of anxiety\, grief and climate as a blog writer and editor for several publications as well as through my role as Design and Communications Manager at Embark. I believe students are often a driving force for change\, but also face complex outside forces when it comes to taking time to eat\, rest\, and engage in community care on top of all the pressures placed on them.
