SUMMARY:Embark's Community Kitchen: When you hear the sizzle
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students.\nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal over a two-hour period. Join us for our first Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, November 13th. We’re welcoming this month’s co-facilitators\, Mariel & Meaghan.\n\n Mariel is a Health Peer with SFU’s Health and Counselling department. Mariel loves comics\, cats\, and good books about science (and more!) and is studying Behavioral Neuroscience\, and during downtime nerd out about anything from food history to music.\n Meaghan is a 5th year student in the BA program in Health Sciences and a Health Peer. She’s got a passion for cooking and loves experimenting with new vegan and vegetarian recipes. You can find her baking sourdough bread\, gardening\, or doing yoga on most days.\n\nYou’re invited to fall in love with the veganized Filipino dish\, Sisig\, over Zoom. The pork-laden grill will be transformed into a plant-based stir-fry to recreate a Filipino meat classic into an equally mouth-watering tofu and mushroom mix. To add some roughage\, we’re throwing in some kale for good measure – you don’t want to miss this!\n\nEven though we’re not meeting in person\, we want to continue to have our Community Kitchens as barrier free as possible! In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for the groceries for Community Kitchen!\nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org\, by Friday November 6th at 4:30pm . We will be asking for your contact information\, including your SFU ID\, SFU email and mailing address.\n\nACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event is being hosted on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. In particular\, this includes the land of the Tsleil-Waututh\, Musqueam\, Skwxwú7mesh\, and Kwikwetlem nations.\n\nACCESSIBILITY\nEmbark events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Career Night - Equity in Sustianability
DESCRIPTION:Embark Sustainability will be hosting a sustainability-themed career night in collaboration with CityStudio Vancouver\, Kwantlen Student Association and UBC Climate Hub this November\, and we would love for you to join us. The event will showcase the stories of outstanding professionals working in sustainability\, looking at how we can integrate equity into different sustainability career paths. The goal is to give students a taste of the types of sustainability career opportunities that exist. \n  \nThe Sustainability Career Night event will consist of fast-paced presentations by a handful of sustainability leaders who work in a range of organizations in Metro Vancouver. Each speaker will discuss their journey to reach their current role\, along with barriers they overcame along the way. There will then be an opportunity for students to talk to the presenters to have their questions addressed more thoroughly and in-depth. \n  \nRSVP required! \n  \nCareer Night is an opportunity for students from SFU\, UBC\, KPU & CityStudio Alumni (SFU\, UBC\, Langara\, Emily Carr\, BCIT) to learn from professionals championing sustainability in various fields. \n  \nAGENDA \nShort presentations and storytelling by speakers\, followed by smaller breakout rooms. \nMore Details TBA \n  \nSPEAKERS \nAnuradha Rao is a conservation biologist\, writer and facilitator born and raised in the traditional territories of the Anishinabewaki\, Attiwonderonk and Haudenosaunee Nations (Dundas\, Ontario) and currently based in the traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ First Nations. These teachings and the principles of ecology have shown her that everything and everyone is connected\, and that we must remember this in our actions and interactions. Anu finds her happy place when she walks off a beach and snorkels among the creatures of the sea. \n  \nNjoki Mbũrũ is a recent graduate of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She specialized in BSc International Community Development\, with a regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa\, and is currently working part-time as a Workshop Facilitator at UBC. SUMMARY:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action - Climate Literacy 101: On a Path to Climate Success
DESCRIPTION:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action \nWednesday\, June 3rd \n12pm-1pm \nDr. Mark Jaccard will speak on how climate-concerned citizens can overcome myths that hinder us from acting in time to prevent extreme climate impacts. Their actions can involve personal consumption choices (electric vehicles\, heat pumps) but these only have an effect if citizens are also engaged in the political process and civil society to elect and support climate-sincere politicians. These personal and collective efforts must align with and foster a global strategy of decarbonization\, especially in developing countries. Come to the talk to find out what is required on a simple path to climate success and what you can contribute. \n  \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a Virtual Lunch & Learn Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAre you an SFU student\, faculty member\, or staff climate champion committed to growing your understanding of climate science and pathways for change? \nClimate Literacy 101 is an opportunity to learn from and engage with leading climate science and policy experts at Simon Fraser University. In their spare time\, Kalamity can be found playing D&D\, reading too many articles on social media\, and carving wooden spoons.” \nACCESSIBILITY & VENUE DETAILS \nClimate \nWe are committed to reducing the waste created by this event\, please remember to bring your reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug. Please consider using public transportation to attend this event. If you need to drive\, please consider carpooling. \nScent Reduction \nWhile we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting\, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. Exposure to laundry products\, colognes\, hairspray\, and many other scented products can trigger serious health reactions in individuals with asthma\, allergies\, migraines\, and/or chemical sensitivities. We ask that you not wear/ apply/ or bring any scented products into this space. \nGender-Inclusive Washrooms \nThere are gendered washrooms in the Halpern Centre building. The nearest gender-inclusive washrooms are a short distance away in the AQ\, next to the Menchie’s. We are looking into whether the Halpern Centre’s washrooms can be designated as gender-inclusive for the duration of the event. \nEvent Location and Wheelchair Access \nHalpern Centre is located pretty well in the middle of the SFU Burnaby campus\, nestled between the Library\, Convocation Mall and the Academic Quadrangle (AQ). There are stairs and a ramp both providing access to the centre. Due to extensive construction on campus\, especially in Convocation Mall\, we encourage folks to arrive early with extra time to navigate the campus. The event space is wheelchair and scooter accessible\, but will require extra navigation due to the construction. \nElectromagnetic Frequencies \nSome folks are sensitive and/or get sick from electromagnetic frequency radiation (EMF). This can include radiation from cell phones\, Wi-Fi\, fluorescent lights\, and more. SFU Burnaby has Wi-Fi set up throughout its campus\, including in the Halpern Centre event space. The event is also in a room equipped with fluorescent lighting. We ask that folks turn off cellphones if possible to help reduce EMF exposure\, recognizing that some folks will need to keep their cellphones on (for work\, emergency contacts\, etc.). \nACKNOWLEDGMENTS \nThis event is being hosted on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. In particular\, this includes the land of the Musqueam\, Skxwú7mesh\, and Tsleil-Waututh nations.

SUMMARY:Student Climate Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Embark\, SFU350\, and ChangeSFU (officially known as the Climate Coalition) are organizing a climate emergency engagement session and we thought you may be interested in attending! \nAs a contribution to the larger climate emergency engagement process taking place at SFU\, the Climate Coalition is organizing a session that is specifically for students as we want to make sure there is space for our voices to be heard\, our ideas to be shared\, and connections to be made through this pressing crisis that affects us all! Before a climate emergency is declared\, we want to ensure that all students have the opportunity to share their perspective\, which is why\, through this event\, we want to create a safe space for any SFU student – regardless of their involvement in climate action – to share their thoughts\, concerns\, and proposals for how SFU can proceed as a leader in the fight against climate change. \nOur session will focus on why climate action matters to students and how it affects us both inside and outside the classroom. The session will be held on Monday\, February 3rd from 12:30 – 2:30 pm on the Burnaby Campus (location TBD) and light refreshments will be provided. RSVP is required as space is limited. Please RSVP here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FFNFJN6. \nBy participating in this engagement session\, you will be providing valuable student input for the climate emergency declaration process. \nWe hope to see you there!
