SUMMARY:Mush-Zoom Adobo: A Virtual Community Kitchen with your (Em)Barkada!
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegister Today \nThis February\, Community Kitchen returns to Zoom with some extra oomph! Join Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre for a guided discussion about Filipino food\, accessing cultural foods in Metro Vancouver\, and our relationships to the meals we cook\, share\, and enjoy. Together we’ll become a barkada of our very own! \nThe event will include a short presentation on Filipino food and its relationship to: \n\nFacilitator Desiree and her family\nFilipinos in the diaspora\nColonization\nCountries (and cuisines!) neighbouring the Philippines.\n\nWhether you prefer listening and learning or chatting and cooking alongside Desiree\, this is a great opportunity to reflect on the connections between food and culture. Those who would like to cook along can email programs@embarksustainability.org for grocery support of up to $20. \nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place across the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, Stó:lō\, and Tsawwassen Nations. We greatly encourage our community members to reflect on the lands they are tuning in from; learn whose lands you occupy through native-land.ca. \nAbout the facilitator: Desiree Gabriel was born and raised on the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Kwantlen\, Tssawwassen\, and Squamish nations\, in so-called Richmond\, BC. Her parents are both from the Tagalog speaking regions of the Philippines\, and typically cooked Filipino food for the family. When Desiree was 17\, she became pescatarian/plant based\, and disconnected largely from the meat intensive foods she grew up with. Nonetheless\, she was lucky enough to grow up in a diverse foodscape\, and with friends of numerous cultural backgrounds who would invite her to dinner. All of this\, alongside her education spurred her passion for food – leading her eventually into the realms of food justice\, cultural food reclamation\, and Indigenous food sovereignty. Her work at Embark Sustainability allows her to delve deeper into what food means to community and in relation to environmental/climate/social/racial justice. Her favourite local restaurants include John 3:16\, Salmon n Bannock\, Kiyabiya\, Di Reggae Cafe\, and Congee Dynasty!!

We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Embark’s faboulus Programs Manager\, Melisa Tang Choy 邓梅英 ! \nMelisa Tang Choy 邓梅英 (she/her/hers) is the daughter of Chinese immigrants from Guangdong province\, born and raised in Lima\, Peru\, and now an immigrant settler on the ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. She’s fueled by bread-making and bread-sharing\, the water\, too much coffee and scary films (the scarier\, the better). \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org\, by Tuesday\, May 25 th at 5 pm. SUMMARY:Co-creating a Climate Resilient SFU
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of interactive dialogue with SFU’s community to exchange ideas and insight towards a climate resilient SFU. \nAbout this event\nThe SFU Sustainability Office\, Embark Sustainability Society\, SFU 350\, and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions have teamed up to host an evening of community dialogue\, inviting SFU community members to share their ideas and experiences with climate impacts and adaptation on campus! This event will provide students\, staff\, and faculty a chance to share their perspectives on what it means to build a resilient community as the climate changes. The goal is to introduce SFU’s work so far in developing a Climate Resilience Plan and to provide a platform for community members to contribute their insights and input into what SFU can do now. \nIncreasing temperatures in and out of buildings on campus and extreme snowfall events are just two consequences of climate change currently felt by community members at SFU’s three campuses. Projected changes in climate include hotter summers\, increased wildfires\, extreme weather events\, and increased precipitation\, which could lead to health and safety hazards for the community. Other potential consequences include decreased productivity of students and staff\, risk of loss of research data\, and increased difficulty in operating labs and classrooms. These are just a few reasons why climate adaptation is crucial for a sustainable and climate resilient future at SFU. \nThis event will consist of numerous dialogues that center on engaging the broader SFU community (students\, faculty\, staff) to share their input on the anticipated impacts and risks that the university will experience from the shocks and stresses of climate change. This dialogue aims to provide a better image of what the community considers to be important and what actions SFU should further take to accommodate these needs. Note that this event will be focused on climate change impacts and climate adaptation actions. If you would like to read more about SFU’s climate mitigation efforts\, you can access the 2025 Strategic Sustainability Plan. \nDuring the event\, attendees will be asked to share images of how you’ve seen impacts of climate change around you. If any participants would like to prepare beforehand\, we encourage them to come prepared with some images they wish to share for this digital activity. \nAttendees will be entered in a draw to win a $50 gift card! \n*The insights from this event will directly contribute to the development of an SFU Climate Resilience Plan. While this event will not be recorded\, we will be taking notes from the discussions. \nACCESSIBILITY\, TECHNOLOGY AND PRIVACY\nAccessibility \nClosed captioning will be available for this event. \nWe will be able to offer ASL interpretation for this event. For us to book and secure an interpreter\, please let us know at rite_steele@sfu.ca by Thursday\, May 20th at 4pm. \nRegistration and password \nA zoom link and password to access this event will be sent to all registrants via email before the event. \nTechnology requirements \nThis workshop will be presented in a participatory webinar format. To engage fully you will need: \nA laptop\, computer\, or smartphone \nA webcam \nA microphone \nSpeakers or headphones \nProtecting your privacy \nTo ensure that we are using online meeting technology in a privacy-conscious way\, we are following best practices for this online event series: \nWe will only circulate the meeting link to those who are registered for the event \nWe will password protect the meeting \nCommunity guidelines \nAbove all\, there will be zero tolerance for those who promote violence against others on the basis of race\, ethnicity\, national origin\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, religious affiliation\, or different ability. Anyone who incites harm towards other participants (be it through the chat\, video or audio functions) will be removed at the discretion of our technical team and moderator. \nBe as present as possible (put away phone\, close/mute tabs). \nThoughtful questions are welcome in the chat throughout the session. If your question is for a particular speaker\, type “@name” at the beginning. \nRespect the opinions of others. Every participant brings information\, points of view and ideas to contribute. \nDon’t assume pronouns/gender/knowledge based on someone’s name or video image. We can refer to people using the usernames they provide! \nMake space\, take space: if you’ve asked a question or shared a comment\, ensure that new voices are heard before you contribute again. \nPractice self-care: if you need to get up or take a break\, please feel free \nQUESTIONS \nIf you have any questions\, concerns\, or comments regarding this event\, please contact Rita at the Sustainability Office at rita_steele@sfu.ca.

SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: For the Love of Peppers
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nAPRIL’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, April 8th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Chloe Goodison! \nChloe Goodison (she/her/hers) : An uninvited guest on Coast Salish territory\, specifically of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Kwikwetlem and Stó:lō nations\, where she lives\, works\, and plays. Chloe is currently in her first year at SFU\, studying Health Sciences. Chloe absolutely loves food\, she especially enjoys finding nutritious\, convenient\, and affordable recipes that can provide students with lots of energy. She loves nature and getting outside to go paddle-boarding and hiking around her own community in Port Moody\, B.C.! \nToday’s recipe is a nutritious\, wholesome and convenient dish for Chloe and her family. With lifelong involvement in sports\, stuffed peppers have always been a good dish to consume between practices. This recipe is also simple and quick to make after a long day of studying. Each recipe in Chloe’s home\, including this one\, has memories with friends and family attached to it. Stuffed peppers are a very flexible and adaptable dish! You could make it fully plant-based\, or\, if you eat dairy\, you can easily add cheese to it! Chloe believes that adopting plant-based diets is a slow process\, and there are steps along the way for everyone to land on and enjoy. \n  \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org. SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: An evening of Mango-nificense
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students. \nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nFEBRUARY’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, February 11th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Lofty! \nLofty : I’m an international student from Guinea studying political science at Simon Fraser University. After living here for a few years now\, one of the many things I appreciate about Vancouver is its culinary diversity. Like many people\, I love eating; there is nothing better than knowing you can find a little bit of everything from everywhere here. In Africa\, We pride ourselves in the tastefulness of our organic fruits and vegetables. If there is one fruit that we have in abundance in Guinée\, it is mango\, especially found during the monsoon seasons. Since Guinean cuisine is all about stews\, a dish incorporating mango was bound to happen. The dish I’m going to share with you guys is Mango Stew. \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org\, by Tuesday February 9th at 12pm. We will be asking for your contact information and to fill out a Participant Data Storage Agreement. \nWhen are we sending the recipes out?\nWe will be sending out the recipes one week in advance so you have time to get the ingredients. We will also be attaching the recipe with each reminder. \n\nACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nWe acknowledge that Embark Sustainability’s work takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, Stó:lō\, and Tsawwassen Nations. \nACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. SUMMARY:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action - Climate Literacy 101: On a Path to Climate Success
DESCRIPTION:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action \nWednesday\, June 3rd \n12pm-1pm \nDr. Mark Jaccard will speak on how climate-concerned citizens can overcome myths that hinder us from acting in time to prevent extreme climate impacts. Their actions can involve personal consumption choices (electric vehicles\, heat pumps) but these only have an effect if citizens are also engaged in the political process and civil society to elect and support climate-sincere politicians. These personal and collective efforts must align with and foster a global strategy of decarbonization\, especially in developing countries.
