Across colonial states\, food systems are shaped by land dispossession\, racialized labour exploitation\, and policies that produce food insecurity while concentrating power.  \nJoin us for a critical discussion led by scholar and community organizers Evelyn Encalada Grez\, Nasya\, and Byron\, who are each at the forefront of advancing migrant justice and Indigenous food sovereignty. Their collective wealth of knowledge and experience will guide our exploration of:  \n  \n\nMigrant labour struggles in agriculture: exploitation\, racialization\, precarity\, and exclusion from rights within colonial labour regimes.\n\n\nThe weaponization of food systems by colonial states:  land dispossession\, food insecurity\, and agricultural control function as tools of governance and oppression\nWhat students can do: how to build true solidarity towards more just and sovereign food systems\n\n  \nTogether\, we’ll connect these struggles to the broader fight for food justice—one rooted in sovereignty\, dignity\, and collective responsibility. \n \n \n \n \n \n Land Acknowledgement\nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place across the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie)\, Qayqayt\, Kwantlen\, Semiahmoo\, and Tsawwassen Nations. SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: For the Love of Peppers
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nAPRIL’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, April 8th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Chloe Goodison! \nChloe Goodison (she/her/hers) : An uninvited guest on Coast Salish territory\, specifically of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Kwikwetlem and Stó:lō nations\, where she lives\, works\, and plays. Chloe is currently in her first year at SFU\, studying Health Sciences. Chloe absolutely loves food\, she especially enjoys finding nutritious\, convenient\, and affordable recipes that can provide students with lots of energy. She loves nature and getting outside to go paddle-boarding and hiking around her own community in Port Moody\, B.C.! \nToday’s recipe is a nutritious\, wholesome and convenient dish for Chloe and her family. With lifelong involvement in sports\, stuffed peppers have always been a good dish to consume between practices. This recipe is also simple and quick to make after a long day of studying. Each recipe in Chloe’s home\, including this one\, has memories with friends and family attached to it. Stuffed peppers are a very flexible and adaptable dish! You could make it fully plant-based\, or\, if you eat dairy\, you can easily add cheese to it! Chloe believes that adopting plant-based diets is a slow process\, and there are steps along the way for everyone to land on and enjoy. \n  \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org. We will be asking for your contact information and to fill out a Participant Data Storage Agreement. \n  \nWhen are we sending the recipes out? \nWe will be sending out the recipes in advance so you have time to get the ingredients. We will also be attaching the recipe with each reminder. \n  \nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, and Tsawwassen Nations. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. In their spare time\, Kalamity can be found playing D&D\, reading too many articles on social media\, and carving wooden spoons.” \nACCESSIBILITY & VENUE DETAILS \nClimate \nWe are committed to reducing the waste created by this event\, please remember to bring your reusable water bottle and/or coffee mug. Please consider using public transportation to attend this event. If you need to drive\, please consider carpooling. \nScent Reduction \nWhile we cannot ensure a fully scent-free event in this setting\, we’re aiming to create a scent-reduced environment by not bringing additional scents into the space. Exposure to laundry products\, colognes\, hairspray\, and many other scented products can trigger serious health reactions in individuals with asthma\, allergies\, migraines\, and/or chemical sensitivities. We ask that you not wear/ apply/ or bring any scented products into this space. \nGender-Inclusive Washrooms \nThere are gendered washrooms in the Halpern Centre building. The nearest gender-inclusive washrooms are a short distance away in the AQ\, next to the Menchie’s. We are looking into whether the Halpern Centre’s washrooms can be designated as gender-inclusive for the duration of the event. \nEvent Location and Wheelchair Access \nHalpern Centre is located pretty well in the middle of the SFU Burnaby campus\, nestled between the Library\, Convocation Mall and the Academic Quadrangle (AQ). There are stairs and a ramp both providing access to the centre. Due to extensive construction on campus\, especially in Convocation Mall\, we encourage folks to arrive early with extra time to navigate the campus. The event space is wheelchair and scooter accessible\, but will require extra navigation due to the construction. \nElectromagnetic Frequencies \nSome folks are sensitive and/or get sick from electromagnetic frequency radiation (EMF). This can include radiation from cell phones\, Wi-Fi\, fluorescent lights\, and more. SFU Burnaby has Wi-Fi set up throughout its campus\, including in the Halpern Centre event space. The event is also in a room equipped with fluorescent lighting. We ask that folks turn off cellphones if possible to help reduce EMF exposure\, recognizing that some folks will need to keep their cellphones on (for work\, emergency contacts\, etc.). \nACKNOWLEDGMENTS \nThis event is being hosted on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. In particular\, this includes the land of the Musqueam\, Skxwú7mesh\, and Tsleil-Waututh nations.
