Our mission is to create a hub that empowers and resources SFU students and allies in their sustainability journeys. We serve transformative communities by centring anti-oppression\, decolonization\, and equity in impactful programming\, events\, and initiatives. Through this work\, we spark dialogue and drive action to dismantle oppressive frameworks within institutions and our interconnected climate and food systems. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About the Role\n				Food Rescue Distributors play a critical role in running the Food Rescue program. In this exciting role\, you will work with your team to gather knowledge about food justice concepts in localized contexts and also apply these concepts through our programming. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Responsibilities\n				\nComplete onboarding training and learnings in order to engage SFU students about important food justice topics and issues.\nExplore food justice materials with other volunteers and with the Director of Engagement on a regular basis.\nWork with Embark Sustainability’s Director of Engagement and the team to facilitate the program on a weekly basis\, including set up and clean up.\nAssist in redistributing Embark Sustainability’s Learning Gardens Produce when there is a surplus.\nOccasionally assist in the redistribution of foods to community partners and assist with pre- and post-distribution\, which includes cleaning up the materials and ensuring all materials are returned to their proper location in the Embark Studio.\nAttend a semesterly check-in meeting with Embark’s Director of Engagement.\n\n  \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Requirements\n				\nAvailability at SFU Burnaby on Thursdays from 12:30PM – 3:00PM \nAvailability on some Mondays or Tuesdays for independent bin drop-offs to Nesters.\nCurrently an SFU undergraduate student\, graduate student\, or Embark associate member.\nA desire to work with an engaged team of people!\nInterest and willingness to learn about Food Distributions\, Food Justice\, Intersectionality and Anti-Oppression. \n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Health Precautions\n				Volunteers are encouraged to wear masks\, and must engage in mandatory hand washing and maintain a respectful amount of space between each other. Hand sanitizer will be provided\, as well as disinfecting wipes and disposable gloves. All equipment used will be sanitized after each use. She is an Indigenous Independent Cultural Facilitator. Leona gained three years of training in Land and Lives around Indigenous Culture with the Resurfacing History Program coordinated by Jolene Andrew. This work has become Leona’s Healing Journey\, the grassroots teachings and knowledge is shared with her children as it is important to know who we are and where we come from and how we live in with the Lands and Waterways around us.As a Gitxsan Refugee in the unceded territories of Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh\, Leona has been taking on land based work here in the city and thrive as a great ambassador to the work Resurfacing History has taught her around Indigenous food and resources that we harvest in the city. Leona advocates at every opportunity with School Boards\, City of Vancouver\, and Vancouver Parks Board for all opportunities for Indigenous People to relearn our culture on the lands and waterways that we live on and actively talk of Reconciliation. \n  \nPablo Vimos (he/him)Pablo is an organic master gardener with a degree in Landscape Ecology. He has been managing Embark gardens for a decade\, facilitating hands-on activities on how to grow food\, plant and maintain gardening beds\, and build wildlife habitats. He loves sharing his knowledge to help others start their gardening journey. \nVancouver Food Justice Coalition The Vancouver Food Justice Coalition formed to create space for community-based organizations and those with lived and living experience to join forces and engage in meaningful policy and systems change work. Stacy grew up on their family’s farm\, where cooking with fresh\, homegrown ingredients was part of their daily life. Having supported small\, local farmers and buying from roadside markets in Kenya\, Stacy now brings that same love for sustainable and local ingredients to Vancouver while preserving the traditions that shape who they are today. They love recreating childhood meals and experimenting with new recipes inspired by her cultural roots.  \nThis Black History Month\, Stacy aims to inspire others to embrace home-cooked meals—not just for health\, but for the stories and heritage they bring. Through this community kitchen\, they hope to create a space where food brings people together to share\, learn\, and celebrate the flavors that shape us. \nMekeil WilsonMekeil is a third-year Sociology major and currently serves as an Executive-at-Large for SOCA. Being born and raised in Jamaica has taught them the importance of food in a building community. Growing up\, their family was deeply involved in farming and poultry raising. Mekeil was encouraged to cultivate seasonal fruits and vegetables in their backyard\, which fostered a deep understanding of food’s importance. Visits to local markets further strengthened their bond with fresh\, locally-grown produce. These experiences shaped their belief that food is a fundamental right—one that should be nutritious\, accessible\, and life-sustaining.  \nMoving to Canada deepened Mekeil’s passion for food justice and the importance of equitable access to healthy\, culturally diverse food. Their favorite Jamaican dish is curry goat\, and they’re also a fan of cheesecake! I am a part of the First Nation of Turtle Island\, adirect descendant of the Lakota Sioux with an ancestry of Anishnabe and Lakota origin. \nBorn to a family of 20\, my siblings have said that I have always been a good cook\, so I thought it was important to follow my passion\, I took up the Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College in January of 2008. During this time\, I was able to garner many scholarships and awards including the very prestigious Student of the Year Award. I graduated top of my class and I followed that up by getting my hospitality management degree with a red seal certification from VCC. Even before I graduated the program\, I was invited to teach in the Aboriginal Culinary Arts Program at Vancouver Community College where I have become a full-time faculty member for the past 12 years. \nI have always advocated that “Food is Medicine” and it is armed with this firm belief that I have started my own catering company – Cedar Feast House Catering\, Ltd. in 2011 to honor my mother Shirley Contois who is the last aboriginal princess of our tribe. My goal is to combine traditional aboriginal cooking with modern culinary techniques.  \nWhat started as a small kitchen with one employee has turned into a bustling business with thirty employees. We are a 100% Indigenous owned catering company that has been operating since 2011. But when I think of newness\, I also think of how cultural traditions transform to create new twists\, giving us throughlines to the past and present. \nFood is often at this epicentre of these throughlines. It carries on the traditions of our ancestors\, while adapting to its new environments.
