Across colonial states\, food systems are shaped by land dispossession\, racialized labour exploitation\, and policies that produce food insecurity while concentrating power.  \nJoin us for a critical discussion led by scholar and community organizers Evelyn Encalada Grez\, Nasya\, and Byron\, who are each at the forefront of advancing migrant justice and Indigenous food sovereignty. Their collective wealth of knowledge and experience will guide our exploration of:  \n  \n\nMigrant labour struggles in agriculture: exploitation\, racialization\, precarity\, and exclusion from rights within colonial labour regimes.\n\n\nThe weaponization of food systems by colonial states:  land dispossession\, food insecurity\, and agricultural control function as tools of governance and oppression\nWhat students can do: how to build true solidarity towards more just and sovereign food systems\n\n  \nTogether\, we’ll connect these struggles to the broader fight for food justice—one rooted in sovereignty\, dignity\, and collective responsibility. \n \n \n \n \n \n Land Acknowledgement\nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place across the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie)\, Qayqayt\, Kwantlen\, Semiahmoo\, and Tsawwassen Nations. We greatly encourage our community members to reflect on the lands they are tuning in from; learn whose lands you occupy through native-land.ca. \n  \nAGenda\n\n1:20PM |Doors Open for Registration\n1:30PM | Food Service Begins\n1:45PM | Land Acknowledgement with Elder Les George\n2:15PM | Introductions\n2:30PM | Key Note Session Part 1\n3:15PM | Break\n3:30PM | Key Note Session Part 2\n4:15PM | Zine-making Activity\n5:15PM | Closing Remarks\n\n \n \nABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nEvelyn Encalada Grez (she/her)Evelyn Encalada Grez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Labour Studies Program at SFU. She is an award-winning scholar and organizer specializing in transnational labour-migration\, migrant justice\, and community-engaged research.  \n \nNasya Moore (she/her)Nasya is a scientist from the Nisga’a Nation and Leq’a:mel First Nation. She is a graduate of the University of British Columbia\, where she studied Indigenous Food Systems. Her work is informed by curiosity and culturally grounded learning\, and an understanding of resilient foodways as healing Indigenous lands and peoples. Passionate about youth engagement and language revitalization\, she supports growing food sovereignty and youth education programs in her home territory of the Nass River valley. Nasya is excited to continue contributing to the reclamation and resilience of Indigenous food systems throughout the west coast. \n  \nByron Cruz  (he/him) Byron came to Canada fleeing persecution for resisting inequity and State violence in Guatemala. We are excited to be joined by Stacy and Mekeil from the SFU Students of Caribbean and African Ancestry (SOCA)\, who will be sharing easy-to-make Jamaican and Kenyan recipes. This event aims to inspire participants to prepare home-cooked meals and preserve cultural bonds through food and shared dining experiences. The featured dishes are thoughtfully chosen to bridge cultural divides within the Caribbean and African diaspora\, recognizing food as a vital means of community-building and restoration. While the month-long celebration comes to a close\, every day we’re witnessing Black History!  \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Land Acknowledgement\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations.\n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nStacy KimaniStacy’s involvement with SOCA is driven by their passion for community-building in spaces that uplift and empower marginalized voices. Stacy grew up on their family’s farm\, where cooking with fresh\, homegrown ingredients was part of their daily life. Having supported small\, local farmers and buying from roadside markets in Kenya\, Stacy now brings that same love for sustainable and local ingredients to Vancouver while preserving the traditions that shape who they are today. They love recreating childhood meals and experimenting with new recipes inspired by her cultural roots.  \nThis Black History Month\, Stacy aims to inspire others to embrace home-cooked meals—not just for health\, but for the stories and heritage they bring. Through this community kitchen\, they hope to create a space where food brings people together to share\, learn\, and celebrate the flavors that shape us. \nMekeil WilsonMekeil is a third-year Sociology major and currently serves as an Executive-at-Large for SOCA. Being born and raised in Jamaica has taught them the importance of food in a building community. Growing up\, their family was deeply involved in farming and poultry raising. Mekeil was encouraged to cultivate seasonal fruits and vegetables in their backyard\, which fostered a deep understanding of food’s importance. Visits to local markets further strengthened their bond with fresh\, locally-grown produce. These experiences shaped their belief that food is a fundamental right—one that should be nutritious\, accessible\, and life-sustaining.  \nMoving to Canada deepened Mekeil’s passion for food justice and the importance of equitable access to healthy\, culturally diverse food. Their favorite Jamaican dish is curry goat\, and they’re also a fan of cheesecake! The phrase “Likkle but we tallawah” (though we’re small\, we’re strong) reflects their resilient spirit. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\n\n\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby.
