Join Embark Sustainability and SFSS Women’s Centre for an evening featuring the fulsome flavours of Egyptian breakfast and tea. In Egypt\, tea is called “shai”\, but “duty” is its common nickname\, because serving tea is considered a must anytime you welcome guests into your home. We’ll cook up delicious eats and chat about serving food to others as an act of care\, connection\, and community building. Don’t miss out on this night steeped in warm flavours and warmer conversations! \nYou’ll be making: \n\nTameya (Falafel)\nHummus\nGibna beda weh outa (Tomato and feta salad)\n\nAlongside orange pekoe tea ☕ \nRSVP ASAP to secure your spot. Members of all gender identities and expressions are welcome. My name is Marie and I’m part of your Food Justice Team and I’m an amateur gardener at the Embark Learning Garden. \nI’m so excited for our community kitchen coming up soon\, as an Indigenous Copt Egyptian\, food has taken many forms and reminds me of resistance. Despite the foreign influences by the Greeks\, Romans\, Persians\, Ottomans\, and French\, among others\, Egyptian cuisine has managed to maintain its unique identity and authenticity. Egyptian food is not just about nourishing the body but also the soul while bringing people together. \nAs we gather together\, we’ll be experiencing all these fusions and influence in our dishes\, but the one thing I want you to remember is\, food is power\, our ability to commune around Egyptian foods highlights that our existence as Indigenous peoples is still present\, and strong. \nFun Fact: In Egypt\, tea is called “shai”. A vital part of daily life and folk etiquette in Egypt. A visit to anyone of any socioeconomic level entails a compulsory cup of tea. A nickname for tea in Egypt is “duty”\, as serving tea to a visitor is considered a duty\, while anything beyond is a nicety. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. Accessibility details include: \n\nAttendees are free to opt in and opt out of activities as suits their needs throughout the event\, including exiting and re-entering the event space.\nUnfortunately\, some appliances and counter areas of this room are not accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids. The dining/lounge area is accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids.\nWe aim to host a scent-free space. Please refrain from wearing scented products in attendance of this event.\nUnfortunately\, we cannot provide ASL interpretation at this time. We will be providing written recipe instructions.\n\nWe aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible. If we can take further action to make this event accessible to you\, please contact Embark Sustainability’s Food Justice Coordinator at food@embarksustainability.org. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Health & Safety\nParticipants who register are agreeing to release Embark Sustainability Society from any liability related to COVID-19. \nMasks are required at all times\, until we are seated and eating as socially distanced as possible.
