DESCRIPTION:  \nRegister Today \nThis February\, Community Kitchen returns to Zoom with some extra oomph! Join Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre for a guided discussion about Filipino food\, accessing cultural foods in Metro Vancouver\, and our relationships to the meals we cook\, share\, and enjoy. Together we’ll become a barkada of our very own! \nThe event will include a short presentation on Filipino food and its relationship to: \n\nFacilitator Desiree and her family\nFilipinos in the diaspora\nColonization\nCountries (and cuisines!) neighbouring the Philippines.\n\nWhether you prefer listening and learning or chatting and cooking alongside Desiree\, this is a great opportunity to reflect on the connections between food and culture. Those who would like to cook along can email programs@embarksustainability.org for grocery support of up to $20. \nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place across the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, Stó:lō\, and Tsawwassen Nations. We greatly encourage our community members to reflect on the lands they are tuning in from; learn whose lands you occupy through native-land.ca. \nAbout the facilitator: Desiree Gabriel was born and raised on the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Kwantlen\, Tssawwassen\, and Squamish nations\, in so-called Richmond\, BC. Her parents are both from the Tagalog speaking regions of the Philippines\, and typically cooked Filipino food for the family. When Desiree was 17\, she became pescatarian/plant based\, and disconnected largely from the meat intensive foods she grew up with. Nonetheless\, she was lucky enough to grow up in a diverse foodscape\, and with friends of numerous cultural backgrounds who would invite her to dinner. All of this\, alongside her education spurred her passion for food – leading her eventually into the realms of food justice\, cultural food reclamation\, and Indigenous food sovereignty. Her work at Embark Sustainability allows her to delve deeper into what food means to community and in relation to environmental/climate/social/racial justice. Her favourite local restaurants include John 3:16\, Salmon n Bannock\, Kiyabiya\, Di Reggae Cafe\, and Congee Dynasty!!

We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Embark’s faboulus Programs Manager\, Melisa Tang Choy 邓梅英 ! \nMelisa Tang Choy 邓梅英 (she/her/hers) is the daughter of Chinese immigrants from Guangdong province\, born and raised in Lima\, Peru\, and now an immigrant settler on the ancestral and stolen territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations. She grew up in her family’s chifa (Chinese-Peruvian restaurant)\, which has been running in the same spot since the late 1990’s\, so food and cooking have always had a special place in her heart. Peru is home to the biggest Chinese diaspora in Latin America. \nMelisa is passionate about people\, their stories and their histories\, place-making and accessibility. She’s fueled by bread-making and bread-sharing\, the water\, too much coffee and scary films (the scarier\, the better). \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Chloe Goodison! \nChloe Goodison (she/her/hers) : An uninvited guest on Coast Salish territory\, specifically of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Kwikwetlem and Stó:lō nations\, where she lives\, works\, and plays. Chloe is currently in her first year at SFU\, studying Health Sciences. Chloe absolutely loves food\, she especially enjoys finding nutritious\, convenient\, and affordable recipes that can provide students with lots of energy. She loves nature and getting outside to go paddle-boarding and hiking around her own community in Port Moody\, B.C.! \nToday’s recipe is a nutritious\, wholesome and convenient dish for Chloe and her family. With lifelong involvement in sports\, stuffed peppers have always been a good dish to consume between practices. This recipe is also simple and quick to make after a long day of studying. Each recipe in Chloe’s home\, including this one\, has memories with friends and family attached to it. Stuffed peppers are a very flexible and adaptable dish! You could make it fully plant-based\, or\, if you eat dairy\, you can easily add cheese to it! Chloe believes that adopting plant-based diets is a slow process\, and there are steps along the way for everyone to land on and enjoy. \n  \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Lofty! \nLofty : I’m an international student from Guinea studying political science at Simon Fraser University. After living here for a few years now\, one of the many things I appreciate about Vancouver is its culinary diversity. Like many people\, I love eating; there is nothing better than knowing you can find a little bit of everything from everywhere here. In Africa\, We pride ourselves in the tastefulness of our organic fruits and vegetables. If there is one fruit that we have in abundance in Guinée\, it is mango\, especially found during the monsoon seasons. Since Guinean cuisine is all about stews\, a dish incorporating mango was bound to happen. The dish I’m going to share with you guys is Mango Stew. \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students.\nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal over a two-hour period. Join us for our first Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, November 13th. We’re welcoming this month’s co-facilitators\, Mariel & Meaghan.\n\n Mariel is a Health Peer with SFU’s Health and Counselling department. Mariel loves comics\, cats\, and good books about science (and more!) and is studying Behavioral Neuroscience\, and during downtime nerd out about anything from food history to music.\n Meaghan is a 5th year student in the BA program in Health Sciences and a Health Peer. She’s got a passion for cooking and loves experimenting with new vegan and vegetarian recipes. You can find her baking sourdough bread\, gardening\, or doing yoga on most days.\n\nYou’re invited to fall in love with the veganized Filipino dish\, Sisig\, over Zoom. The pork-laden grill will be transformed into a plant-based stir-fry to recreate a Filipino meat classic into an equally mouth-watering tofu and mushroom mix. To add some roughage\, we’re throwing in some kale for good measure – you don’t want to miss this!\n\nEven though we’re not meeting in person\, we want to continue to have our Community Kitchens as barrier free as possible! We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Denise Somuah-Asamoah. \nDenise Somuah-Asamoah is a Biomedical Physiology undergraduate student from Ghana who has been studying at SFU since the Fall of 2017. She has been involved in life here at SFU through volunteering in various clubs such as the Students of Caribbean and African Ancestry and the African Students Association. She has been a foodie for as long as she can remember and began to explore the world of vegetarianism and veganism when she moved to Canada in 2015. She loves to experiment in the kitchen and try new things like “veganizing” traditional Ghanaian dishes. I was born and raised in Addis Ababa\, Ethiopia. My parents are both from there. Because my family size is large\, I spent half the time at my grandmother’s\, which is where I learned how to cook. Read below on this month’s facilitator.\n\nPaola Quiros\, SFSS Women’s Centre Coordinator\, will bring us into a new exploration of Latin American flavours. Aside from being the head of the SFSS Women’s Centre\, Paola has been cooking since an early age\, and at one moment she considered becoming a chef. She celebrates life and the Doña’s (matriarchs) who have taught her unforgettable and tasty recipes.
