She yearns to throw her phone away and live alone in the forest but she needs Youtube to eat. Her goals are to live in and uphold a community that is able to embrace the femininity of life recovered from the dominating effects of colonial and capitalist practice or die in the near future from a microchip implanted in her brain. \n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. In Egypt\, tea is called “shai”\, but “duty” is its common nickname\, because serving tea is considered a must anytime you welcome guests into your home. We’ll cook up delicious eats and chat about serving food to others as an act of care\, connection\, and community building. Don’t miss out on this night steeped in warm flavours and warmer conversations! \nYou’ll be making: \n\nTameya (Falafel)\nHummus\nGibna beda weh outa (Tomato and feta salad)\n\nAlongside orange pekoe tea ☕ \nRSVP ASAP to secure your spot. My name is Marie and I’m part of your Food Justice Team and I’m an amateur gardener at the Embark Learning Garden. \nI’m so excited for our community kitchen coming up soon\, as an Indigenous Copt Egyptian\, food has taken many forms and reminds me of resistance. Despite the foreign influences by the Greeks\, Romans\, Persians\, Ottomans\, and French\, among others\, Egyptian cuisine has managed to maintain its unique identity and authenticity. Egyptian food is not just about nourishing the body but also the soul while bringing people together. \nAs we gather together\, we’ll be experiencing all these fusions and influence in our dishes\, but the one thing I want you to remember is\, food is power\, our ability to commune around Egyptian foods highlights that our existence as Indigenous peoples is still present\, and strong. \nFun Fact: In Egypt\, tea is called “shai”. A vital part of daily life and folk etiquette in Egypt. A visit to anyone of any socioeconomic level entails a compulsory cup of tea. A nickname for tea in Egypt is “duty”\, as serving tea to a visitor is considered a duty\, while anything beyond is a nicety. My name is Zaena\, and I am the new Programs Manager for Embark Sustainability! I’m recently graduated from SFU as a Philosophy and International Studies Major. I was raised on the unceded traditional territories of the Kwikwetlem nation\, which resides in shared territories of the Musquem\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Sto’:lo\, and Katzi nations – or\, what is Colonially known as “Coquitlam”. \nThere’s a lot of new beginnings for me – A new school year\, Ethiopian New Years has just passed\, and I’m new to Embark! Newness often feels like a sudden and uncomfortable break in what we know. But when I think of newness\, I also think of how cultural traditions transform to create new twists\, giving us throughlines to the past and present. \nFood is often at this epicentre of these throughlines. It carries on the traditions of our ancestors\, while adapting to its new environments. This cultural fluidity reminds me that newness has a cushion of the familiar underneath – which is almost as comforting a thought as eating some delicious Ethiopian meals. I’m a Health Sciences student and a Food Justice Facilitator at Embark Sustainability. \nI was born and raised in Bénin republic for most of my childhood but I have lived in several other countries including Ethiopia and Ghana. Having moved around frequently\, I got the opportunity to try out a variety of meals across cultures. I appreciate that several countries share meals in common and love how that builds a sense of connection and community. As such\, I am particularly interested in this Community Kitchen as we explore meals we share commonly in Western Africa\, alongside my co-host. I look forward to discussing\, engaging\, and cooking with you all! \n  \nHello everyone my name is Welle Dias (she/her). I’m a Cameroonian majoring in Interactive Arts and Technology and minoring in Business Administration at SFU. \nAs a Cameroonian citizen\, what I love about my country is the culture\, especially the food. We have all sorts of variety of food depending on the region. However\, what brings us all together is the love that we put in when making meals. Cooking for others symbolizes how much we appreciate\, hence I hope to pass this message across my food as well. I also enjoy cooking home meals to remind myself where I am from and in hopes of making others appreciate my culture too. \n  \nEVENT ACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. SUMMARY:Easy Eats! Community Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:Join Embark Sustainability\, Hi-FIVE and the SFSS Women’s Centre for this community kitchen to share struggle meal recipe ideas and explore how mental health can affect our relationships with eating and preparing food. You’ll get to: \n\n👯 Meet new people\n🧑‍🍳 Brainstorm and share recipes\n💬 Chat about community care and mental health\n😋 Share and enjoy a delish meal\n\nRSVP ASAP to secure your spot. Members of all gender identities and expressions are welcome 🙂 \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nNazafarin Esfandiari\, Hi-FIVE Coordinator \nMy name is Nazafarin\, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a Health Sciences student\, and the current Hi-FIVE (Movement for Mental Health) Coordinator. \nI am from Iran\, and in our culture\, just like many other cultures\, food is a way of connecting back to ourselves and our communities. \nThere are many different ways in which food and mental well-being are interconnected. Our level of mental well-being can impact our eating patterns and vice versa. That is briefly why I am passionate about addressing this topic further\, and I look forward to hearing others’ experiences and perspectives as well. \nJamie Hill\, Embark Design and Communications Manager \nHi everyone\, my name is Jamie (she/they) and I’m a settler living on the ancestral homelands of the Qayqayt and Musqueam Nations\, otherwise known as New West. \nI have a passion for environmental communication\, exploring the intersections of anxiety\, grief and climate as a blog writer and editor for several publications as well as through my role as Design and Communications Manager at Embark. I believe students are often a driving force for change\, but also face complex outside forces when it comes to taking time to eat\, rest\, and engage in community care on top of all the pressures placed on them. I’m looking forward to exploring these intersections with you all and hopefully lessening the load! \nACKNOWLEDGMENTS \nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. \nEVENT ACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. SUMMARY:Mush-Zoom Adobo: A Virtual Community Kitchen with your (Em)Barkada!
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegister Today \nThis February\, Community Kitchen returns to Zoom with some extra oomph! Join Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre for a guided discussion about Filipino food\, accessing cultural foods in Metro Vancouver\, and our relationships to the meals we cook\, share\, and enjoy. Together we’ll become a barkada of our very own! \nThe event will include a short presentation on Filipino food and its relationship to: \n\nFacilitator Desiree and her family\nFilipinos in the diaspora\nColonization\nCountries (and cuisines!) neighbouring the Philippines.\n\nWhether you prefer listening and learning or chatting and cooking alongside Desiree\, this is a great opportunity to reflect on the connections between food and culture. Those who would like to cook along can email programs@embarksustainability.org for grocery support of up to $20. \nEmbark Sustainability’s work takes place across the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem)\, Katzie\, Semiahmoo\, Qayqayt\, Stó:lō\, and Tsawwassen Nations. We greatly encourage our community members to reflect on the lands they are tuning in from; learn whose lands you occupy through native-land.ca. \nAbout the facilitator: Desiree Gabriel was born and raised on the unceded and traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Kwantlen\, Tssawwassen\, and Squamish nations\, in so-called Richmond\, BC. Her parents are both from the Tagalog speaking regions of the Philippines\, and typically cooked Filipino food for the family. When Desiree was 17\, she became pescatarian/plant based\, and disconnected largely from the meat intensive foods she grew up with. Nonetheless\, she was lucky enough to grow up in a diverse foodscape\, and with friends of numerous cultural backgrounds who would invite her to dinner. All of this\, alongside her education spurred her passion for food – leading her eventually into the realms of food justice\, cultural food reclamation\, and Indigenous food sovereignty. Her work at Embark Sustainability allows her to delve deeper into what food means to community and in relation to environmental/climate/social/racial justice. Her favourite local restaurants include John 3:16\, Salmon n Bannock\, Kiyabiya\, Di Reggae Cafe\, and Congee Dynasty!!

SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: For the Love of Peppers
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nAPRIL’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, April 8th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Chloe Goodison! \nChloe Goodison (she/her/hers) : An uninvited guest on Coast Salish territory\, specifically of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, Tsleil-Waututh\, Qayqayt\, Kwikwetlem and Stó:lō nations\, where she lives\, works\, and plays. Chloe is currently in her first year at SFU\, studying Health Sciences. Chloe absolutely loves food\, she especially enjoys finding nutritious\, convenient\, and affordable recipes that can provide students with lots of energy. She loves nature and getting outside to go paddle-boarding and hiking around her own community in Port Moody\, B.C.! \nToday’s recipe is a nutritious\, wholesome and convenient dish for Chloe and her family. With lifelong involvement in sports\, stuffed peppers have always been a good dish to consume between practices. This recipe is also simple and quick to make after a long day of studying. Each recipe in Chloe’s home\, including this one\, has memories with friends and family attached to it. Stuffed peppers are a very flexible and adaptable dish! You could make it fully plant-based\, or\, if you eat dairy\, you can easily add cheese to it! Chloe believes that adopting plant-based diets is a slow process\, and there are steps along the way for everyone to land on and enjoy. \n  \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org. SUMMARY:Embark's Virtual Community Kitchen: An evening of Mango-nificense
DESCRIPTION:Come together virtually to cook-a-long and enjoy a vegetarian or plant-based meal\, while connecting with other SFU students. \nCommunity Kitchens are a low-barrier gathering space where SFU students come together to cook-a-long and share stories through food. \nFEBRUARY’S FACILITATORS \nJoin us for our Virtual Community Kitchen over Zoom\, February 11th. We’re welcoming this month’s facilitator\, Lofty! \nLofty : I’m an international student from Guinea studying political science at Simon Fraser University. After living here for a few years now\, one of the many things I appreciate about Vancouver is its culinary diversity. Like many people\, I love eating; there is nothing better than knowing you can find a little bit of everything from everywhere here. In Africa\, We pride ourselves in the tastefulness of our organic fruits and vegetables. If there is one fruit that we have in abundance in Guinée\, it is mango\, especially found during the monsoon seasons. Since Guinean cuisine is all about stews\, a dish incorporating mango was bound to happen. The dish I’m going to share with you guys is Mango Stew. \nWhile we have moved this program online\, we still want to make this space as low-barrier as possible. In partnership with the SFSS’s Women’s Centre\, we will be offering support for groceries for Community Kitchen! \nPlease email Melisa Tang Choy\, Embark’s Programs Manager\, at programs@embarksustainability.org\, by Tuesday February 9th at 12pm.
