She is the co-founder of Justice for Migrant Workers (J4MW)\, a collective that has been at the forefront of the migrant farmworker movement in Canada for over 20 years. She is an award-winning scholar and organizer that specializes in transnational labour-migration\, migrant justice\, and community-engaged research.    \n \n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Gabriel Allahdua (he/him)\n				  \n\n \nMeet Gabriel\nGabriel is a former migrant farm worker from St. Lucia\, an island in the Eastern Caribbean. For almost a decade\, he has organized with the (J4MW) collective. He was an Activist in Residence (AIR) at the University of Guelph\, the first person to hold that position\, which brought activists and researchers together.  \nGabriel is currently an Outreach Worker working with migrant workers across Ontario and Education and Mobilization Officer with the Association for the Rights of Household and Farm Workers (DTMF).  \n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Aaraón Díaz Mendiburo (he/him)\n				  \n\n \nMeet Aaraón\nAaraón is an academic and filmmaker that has followed migrant workers and their families for over a decade. His research deals with health\, education\, employment\, social representation\, and intercultural relations issues of agricultural migrants to Canada\, their families\, and both their communities of origin and destination. As an independent documentary filmmaker\, he has directed and produced Migrant Mother (2020)\, Matices: “Temporary” Migration in Canada (2011)\, and Migrants: Those who come from within (2007). He is currently working on his fourth documentary about activism on cannabis destigmatization in North America.  \nAaraón is also a professor in the anthropology bachelor’s program and in the master’s Mexico-USA program at the Center for Research on North America – UNAM / Researchers (UNAM). He has further taught in the master’s migration studies program at the Universidad Iberoamericana. Join us with Salma and Samia for a community kitchen that defines and bridges the shared agrarian struggles between Indonesia and Rwanda.  \nIndonesia and Rwanda both have predominantly agrarian economies\, yet food insecurity\,  displacement\, and the exploitation of farmers amoung several other forms of oppression are rampant within these nations. In this community kitchen\, Burmese students Aung Chan Pyae and Phone Min Thant invite us to explore this question through the lens of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. \nAs we prepare Burmese dishes together\, our facilitators will share stories and insights on how militarization has disrupted food systems\, livelihoods\, and daily survival for Burmese communities. As someone who has seen Myanmar’s conflicted political situation first-hand\, William will be combining his love for cooking with his aspirations to introduce Burmese cuisine to the SFU student community. \nPhone Min Thant (he/him/they)Phone is a third-year (Honours) student in the SFU School for International Studies who was also born and raised in Myanmar (Burma). He serves as the Food Justice Coordinator at Embark Sustainability Society\, where he plays a leading role in organizing and administering community-oriented food justice-related events alongside the Food Justice Collective. His academic research interests and works include Southeast Asian politics and diplomacy\, armed conflict studies\, defence and demilitarization affairs. He also actively participates in the policy realm\, having authored two policy briefs on various topics. His past experience includes being a research assistant for the Research Network for Women\, Peace\, and Security (RN-WPS). They coordinate and facilitate education and outreach initiatives for SFU and FIC undergraduate and graduate students. Their commitment as an Educator is to center the voices of historically marginalized groups\, create reflective educational experiences through an intersectional lens\, and find creative strategies to foster communities of care. \n  \nMarie Haddad (she/her)Marie\, an SFU Grad student and Coptic Egyptian\, serves as the Director of Engagement at Embark Sustainability Society\, where she develops and leads inclusive\, community-focused initiatives. Before taking on this role\, she spent five years as a student organizer dedicated to advancing equitable and sustainable education\, uplifting marginalized communities\, and championing intersectionality\, anti-oppression\, and anti-racism. As the inaugural VP of Equity and Sustainability at the SFSS\, Marie helped drive landmark joint-campaigns such as the 15 Black Faculty Cluster Hiring\, and SFU’s multi-million-dollar fossil fuel divestment – and led B.C.’s first unanimously passed policy on Palestinian Liberation and BDS at the SFSS\, later adopted as a bylaw. Stacy grew up on their family’s farm\, where cooking with fresh\, homegrown ingredients was part of their daily life. Having supported small\, local farmers and buying from roadside markets in Kenya\, Stacy now brings that same love for sustainable and local ingredients to Vancouver while preserving the traditions that shape who they are today. They love recreating childhood meals and experimenting with new recipes inspired by her cultural roots.  \nThis Black History Month\, Stacy aims to inspire others to embrace home-cooked meals—not just for health\, but for the stories and heritage they bring. Through this community kitchen\, they hope to create a space where food brings people together to share\, learn\, and celebrate the flavors that shape us. \nMekeil WilsonMekeil is a third-year Sociology major and currently serves as an Executive-at-Large for SOCA. Being born and raised in Jamaica has taught them the importance of food in a building community. Growing up\, their family was deeply involved in farming and poultry raising. Mekeil was encouraged to cultivate seasonal fruits and vegetables in their backyard\, which fostered a deep understanding of food’s importance. Visits to local markets further strengthened their bond with fresh\, locally-grown produce. These experiences shaped their belief that food is a fundamental right—one that should be nutritious\, accessible\, and life-sustaining.  \nMoving to Canada deepened Mekeil’s passion for food justice and the importance of equitable access to healthy\, culturally diverse food. Their favorite Jamaican dish is curry goat\, and they’re also a fan of cheesecake! Since immigrating to Canada in the 1990s\, Aindrila has worked in many different capacities and while she is currently a healthcare unit clerk by day\, she has a deep passion for cooking\, art and dancing that she loves to share together with loved ones. As a homechef who grew up in Kolkata\, teaches how to cook and occasionally takes orders\, she is excited to share a taste of Bengali food with you all!  \nRea রিয়া (she/they): Rea is a first generation bengali settler living on stolen and occupied Musqueam territory. As a student\, Rea is studying psychology\, gender\, sexuality and women’s studies\, and asian studies with hopes to work in community archives and libraries! As an organizer Rea has also worked on and off campus with struggles of anti-imperialism\, migrant justice\, climate justice\, anti-carceral advocacy\, tuition freeze\, labour rights and mutual aid work to support unhoused community members in Surrey. Tricia has extensive experience counselling individuals and families and is skilled in treating: Trauma\, Anxiety\, Transitional/Career and Relational issues. She is also an active community and social services professional who worked for some years as a Residential Youth Worker and in on the board for new Hope Community Services serving refugee families. Tricia is an advocate for anti-racism that affects BIPOC individuals and consults with organizations to foster a more anti-racist approach. Tricia is the owner of a counselling practice called Metamorphose Counselling and is the host of a YouTube channel called Meta Transitions. \nPaola Quirós-CruzPaola Quirós-Cruz is one of the educators at the Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office. Paola is responsible for overseeing the education undergraduate and graduate portfolios\, as well as co-leading numerous SVSPO awareness campaigns. Since an early age\, Paola has been passionate about cooking\, and at one point\, she even considered becoming a chef. Paola enjoys connecting with people through hosting and food\, and celebrates the Doñas (matriarchs) who have taught Paola unforgettable and tasty recipes by sharing dishes and food with the community. I am a Health Sciences student\, and the current Hi-FIVE (Movement for Mental Health) Coordinator. \nI am from Iran\, and in our culture\, just like many other cultures\, food is a way of connecting back to ourselves and our communities. \nThere are many different ways in which food and mental well-being are interconnected. Our level of mental well-being can impact our eating patterns and vice versa. She was raised in a blended family with 5 siblings of Jamaican and Japanese heritage\, and is of Thai heritage herself. As someone who expresses their creative outlet through cooking and baking\, it has been a fun and delicious journey connecting to her heritage and cultural background by learning how to make Thai food. \nAlongside being a creative outlet\, Ellen believes making food (especially for friends and family) is a celebration and an expression of love. Her love for food has also transferred over in her studies at SFU as an Environmental and Resource Management Planning student where she has a special interest in sustainable food systems. DESCRIPTION:We’ll be hosting our first ever hybrid Community Kitchen this March 8th\, 2022! Let’s say goodbye to winter together with a hearty meal filled with flavour. Kala Roy will be sharing her recipe for “Super Meal” and Naan\, which is chock full of healthy grains\, proteins\, and delish Indian spices. This one-pot meal is perfect to share with vegan and non-vegan friends alike! \nWe’ll also chat about Kala’s cooking principles\, building community through intersecting discussions about food as culture\, food as connection\, and food as communication. \nA collaborative effort of Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre\, Community Kitchens are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members.
