Her work blends storytelling\, environmental advocacy\, and cultural revitalization. She co-wrote\, directed\, and produced Our Grandmother the Inlet (2023)\, which received an honourable mention for Best Canadian Short at the Vancouver International Film Festival and won the Trickster Award at SFU’s Skoden indigenous film festival. Kayah is currently co-directing a National Geographic-funded educational documentary series on orcas and matriarchy with Danielle Khan Da Silva. Recognized in Globe and Mail and named one of Corporate Knights’ “30 Under 30” sustainability leaders in Canada\, she continues to work in film and activism. Peasant farmers in the Philippines are on the frontlines of overlapping crises—climate breakdown\, systemic corruption\, land dispossession\, militarization\, and repeated violations of their basic rights. \nPeasants are a class of people in the Philippines who work on the land of a feudal landlord—not to be confused with its derogatory connotation in Western contexts.  For this month of solidarity\, join us as we immerse ourselves in the lived realities of peasants through a narrative activity and teach-in. Together\, we will connect the peasant struggle to the climate crisis and entrenched systems of corruption and land dispossession enforced by the state and backed by foreign corporations and banks. Through this collective dramatization\, participants will not only witness the resilience and struggles of peasant communities but also be given a few options to stand in solitary. When we recognize place names like Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten\, we are acknowledging the original histories that have been here since time immemorial\, prior to the colonization of these spaces. \nThe Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline continues to be a critical issue impacting our communities\, environment\, and future. As students and community members\, we have a role to play in shaping the response\, ensuring that voices of resistance are heard\, and building collective strategies for action. This event is a follow-up to the recent community town hall on TMX\, offering an opportunity to deepen student understanding of the project\, its ongoing effects\, and what we can do moving forward to stay prepared. Tara is currently a member of the BCTF Committee for Action on Social Justice\, as well as the BC Federation of Labour Climate Justice & Jobs Committee. They also represent the Greater Victoria Teachers’ Association (GVTA) as a Local Representative to the BCTF\, and sit on the GVTA Climate Justice Committee. In addition to union work\, Tara also works extensively with community based climate justice organizations\, including the UBC Centre for Climate Justice\, the West Coast Climate Action Coalition\, Parents 4 Climate and Climate Justice Victoria. A life long trade union activist\, Tara is excited to work with others to strengthen relationships between labour and the community so that we can collectively build the power to change the world. \n \nKatie Perfitt\, Organizer & Campaigner – David Suzuki Foundation’s Climate Team \nKatie Perfitt is an organizer and campaigner currently based on the unceded and unsurrendered land of the Algonquin Anishinaabe peoples\, otherwise known as the Ottawa Valley. She cut her teeth in organizing during her time living in K’jipuktuk (Halifax) with Divest Dal\, a fossil fuel divestment campaign at Dalhousie University\, and in the decade since\, has been a part of dozens climate and social justice campaigns. She led distributed\, base-building organizing across Atlantic Canada that pushed dozens of municipalities in the region to recognize the Right to a Healthy Environment. She spent 7 years with the 350.org Canada team to build people-power to confront the power of the fossil fuel industry and to build public support for Green New Deal scale ambition to tackle the climate crisis. She has trained hundreds of organizers through Olivia Chow’s Institute for Change Leaders\, and was a part of the core organizing team who had Joel Harden\, MPP for Ottawa Centre\, first elected. She now works for the David Suzuki Foundation’s Climate Team\, working to grow support for climate-saving clean energy that leaves no one behind. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her dogs\, in nature\, or tending to her chickens and her garden on her hobby farm. \n \nSamantha Myran\, Lawyer – West Coast Environmental Law \nSam Myran (she/her/ikwe) was born in Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, and is from Giinooshkoodeyang\, now known as Long Plain First Nation in southern Manitoba. She came to pursue law as a direct result of the Idle No More movement which opened her eyes and influenced her to become a part of advocating for change. Following that winter\, Samantha returned to post-secondary studies to earn an Associate of Arts in Aboriginal Studies from Langara College\, a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations and Indigenous Studies from the University of British Columbia\, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Manitoba. During her academic career\, Samantha became a member of many student groups including the Alliance of British Columbia Students through her role with the Langara Students Union as the Aboriginal Students Advisor\, the Langara Aboriginal Students Association\, and the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association. In community she has been a part of planning such events as elders’ trips\, an Aboriginal Veteran’s Day Pow Wow\, and family days in the Central Park of Winnipeg. Samantha takes pride in her experience working in areas of Indigenous governance within her home community\, restorative justice initiatives (as a research practicum student at Onashowewin Justice Circle)\, as well as in customer service. \n \nNavjot Jassar\, Lawyer – West Coast Environmental Law \nNavjot Jassar (she/her) is a staff lawyer at West Coast Environmental Law. She provides legal support to First Nations who are establishing Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) or are otherwise revitalizing Indigenous law to protect their territorial land\, air and water. \n \nPaige Gorsak\, Organizing Manager – Dogwood \nPaige (she/they) is a queer\, white settler living on unceded and unsurrendered Musqueam\, Tsleil Waututh and Squamish territory in Vancouver. Born and raised in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton)\, she is passionate about climate justice\, anti-colonial solidarity\, and collective liberation. Earlier in her career\, Paige worked in public libraries and completed her master’s degree in Gender and Social Justice. But after a period of climate despair and depression\, she found a home in climate movement. She first cut her teeth organizing sit-ins\, marches\, and blockades in support of land-based resistance movements\, and later campaigning for free public transit as a climate and racial justice intervention. Once upon a time\, she even ran for federal office with a campaign for a just transition to 100% renewables. As Dogwood’s Organizing Manager\, Paige is hard at work building grassroots power in the Lower Mainland toward bold climate action. Throughout Wyss’s 30 year practice\, Wyss’s work encompasses storytelling and collaborative initiatives through their knowledge and restoration of Indigenous plants and natural spaces. Wyss has been recognized for exchanging traditional knowledge in remediating our relationship to land through digital media\, site-specific engagements and weaving. Wyss has participated and exhibited at galleries\, museums\, festivals and public space such as Vancouver Art Gallery\, Morris\, Helen Belkin Art Gallery\, Contemporary Art Gallery and the PuSh Festival to name a few. Their work can be found in various collections such as the National Library of Canada\, Special Collections at the Walter Phillips Gallery\, and the Vancouver Public Library. They have lead the transformation of Semi-Public (半公開) during their Fellowship at 221a and they are the 2021 ethnobotanist resident at the Wild Bird Sanctuary. Currently a Community Planner with the City of Surrey\, she holds a Masters of Urban Studies and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Geography Major) from Simon Fraser University. \nTj Conwi; Restaurant Owner & Consultant \nOno Vancouver is run by TJ Conwi\, whose culinary curiosity began with his roots in the Philippines\, and led him to restaurants\, private clubs and hotels earlier in his career. Most recently as the Executive Chef of Marriott Delta Vancouver Suites.  \nApplying his passion for West Coast and Asian cuisine to innovative\, local and sustainably sourced ingredients\, TJ supports small- to medium-size business food programs with clients ranging from breweries and local chain restaurants\, to startups and non-profits. At the onset of the pandemic\, Ono Vancouver quickly pivoted to support food security. The team began rescuing surplus food to cook thousands of meals for people in need every week—and they never stopped. The community initiative has evolved into ReRoot\, the city’s first chef-run surplus food hub and social enterprise. \nChef TJ is also the executive chef and food educator for LunchLAB an innovative school meal program involving school kids learning and helping feed 200 of their peers every week. \nIone Smith; Agrologist  \n­Ione is passionate about working to find solutions to challenging food system problems. She is a Professional Agrologist with an academic background in land resource science and community engagement. In 2010\, Ione formed Upland Agricultural Consulting\, which has since grown into an award-winning consulting company with projects in British Columbia\, Alberta\, and the Yukon. Ione’s day-to-day work allows her to engage with farmers\, all levels of government\, and First Nations communities to improve the resiliency and sustainability of our agriculture and food systems. This March we are inviting you ALL – especially women\, femme\, and allies to celebrate women with unique backgrounds in our communities who work on developing innovative solutions towards climate equity. \nIn an extraordinary panel discussion\, you will be invited to ponder on how innovation can propel the climate equity movement while hearing students and professionals share their experiences and insights on climate equity in motion. The panel discussion is followed by an engaging community-building discussions with focus on connecting with like-minded folks passionate about innovative and creative solutions. \nRSVP required! \nThis event is a collaboration between Embark Sustainability\, Sustainable Energy Engineering Student Society\, and SFSS Women’s Centre. \nSPEAKERS \nSimone Williamson (she/her) is a freelance artist and digital marketer with the national environmental law non-profit\, Ecojustice. Her responsibilities include the management\, content creation and strategy of Ecojustice’s social media channels and production of in-house graphic design. Her freelance art practice specializes in digital illustration\, animation and acrylic painting\, with themes of gender justice\, the environment and “Hero’s Journey” storytelling. \nOutside of her work\, Simone is an avid backcountry skier and mentor with Mountain Mentors\, a local non-profit that provides peer-to-peer backcountry sports mentorship for gender marginalized people. She loves to dance\, make conversations with strangers\, and connect with her community. \n\nAllyson (Ally) Soriano (she/her/hers) is a the social media lead for SFU350 – a student-led climate justice club at SFU. She’s in her fifth year studying Communications and Indigenous Studies. I am Indigenous to the lands that make up what is colonially known as the Phillippines\, and blessed to be born and raised on the beautiful Coast Salish territories known traditionally as sc̓əwaθenaɁɬ təməxw (Tsawwassen)\, S’ólh Téméxw (Stó:lō)\, Kwantlen\, Stz’uminus and šxwməθkwəy̓ əmaɁɬ təməxw (Musqueam) nations. \nAllyson is passionate about climate justice\, intersectional feminism\, being in community\, finding and cooking delicious food\, and cat parenthood (her name is Cinnamon!) \n\nRebecca Ballard (she/her/they/them) is a third-year student at SFU. Majoring in Indigenous Studies and minoring in Counseling and Human Development; and Gender Sexuality and Women’s Studies. Working as a part of SFU350 which is a student-led group on campus organizing for climate justice and mobilizing for systemic change in solidarity with intersecting movements. A majority of the work Rebecca does is based in building community and relationality in resistance to individuality that is pushed so heavily in academic institutions and society as a whole. \n\nJacqueline (she/her) is a uninvited settler on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territory in what is colonially known as Vancouver. She is a passionate learner\, community builder\, and climate organizer who loves bringing awareness to the intersectional nature of climate issues\, and centering justice\, equity and accessibility in her work. Jacqueline has a background in International Relations from the University of British Columbia\, and believes deeply in the power of hope\, joy and community in the climate movement! Join us for a lunchtime discussion on March 1st with Jacob Crane from Indigenous Climate Action! We are so excited to have Jacob come and speak to SFU students about the intersections of climate justice\, LandBack!\, and how we build toward Indigenous futures. He will also be speaking about Landback in the context of the TMX pipeline\, the terminus of which is located only 10 minutes away from SFU Burnaby campus\, highlighting the role universities and students play in addressing climate violence and its impact on Indigenous peoples and territories. This will be an online\, one hour event with a Q&A. \nSpeaker bio \nJacob is a citizen of the Tsuut’ina Nation\, Alberta\, Canada. He is the Community Engagement Coordinator for Indigenous Climate Action\, an Indigenous women-led organization dedicated to creating a world with sovereign and thriving Indigenous Peoples and cultures leading climate justice for all. He first joined the climate justice movement in 2015 after hearing about the No Dakota Access Pipeline and the struggles that the Standing Rock Sioux tribe was experiencing.
