DESCRIPTION:Join Embark Sustainability for an evening of activities to help you explore the concept of climate equity and what it means to you! \nThis is the event for you who are climate curious and want to feel more climate confident. Join us for an evening centring YOU (communities and people) and how your unique passions\, skills\, and interests can fill gaps in climate justice spaces. Through interactive activities\, and inspiring speakers we’ll explore the meaning of climate equity and its connection to you. \nYou don’t need any previous knowledge or experience – come as you are and be introduced to a community that will lead you to find your passions and personal connections to climate equity. Let’s start writing your climate story! \nYou can expect to leave this event with a better understanding of: \n📣 How to speak out\, find the confidence to take action\, and trust in your ability to advocate for change \n🌎 What climate topics interest you the most \n💚 How angles of your personal life\, skills\, passions\, and dreams can connect to climate equity \nRSVP required! \n  \nSPEAKER \nAK Saini (they/she) \nDirector of Organizing\, Organizing for Change (OFC) \nAK brings to OFC nearly two decades of experience in grassroots community organizing with a particular passion for people-powered policy change. They played a lead role in organizing to win an historic raise in the U.S. federal tipped minimum wage and the decriminalization of medical cannabis in New York State. She is a proud daughter of working-class immigrants\, political science graduate of the University of Toronto and McMaster University\, and human to fur babies Mitz & Fitz the cats. \n  \nAGENDA \n5 mins: Embark Sustainability Introduction & Acknowledgement \n25 mins: Speakers share their climate stories \n60 mins: Activity stations (15 mins x 4 stations) \n25 mins: Storyboarding process\, opportunity to share within the groups if comfortable \n5 mins: Conclusion \n  \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nThis event will take place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. Unceded means that this land was never surrendered\, transferred or relinquished in any way and\, as such\, the land remains sovereign Indigenous territory. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at SFU Burnaby in the SUB Ballroom (located on the 5th floor of the SUB). Accessibility details to note include: \nThe fifth floor of the SUB is accessible via elevator and hosts accessible washrooms\, including a single-stall all gender washroom. \nWe aim to host a scent-free space. Please refrain from wearing scented products in attendance of this event. \nUnfortunately\, we cannot provide ASL interpretation at this time. However\, we can provide a copy of the facilitator’s script. \nSturdy\, armless chairs will be available for those looking to sit during this event. \nAttendees are free to opt in and opt out of activities as suits their needs throughout the event\, including exiting and re-entering the event space. \nWe aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible.
