SUMMARY:Climate Workshop: Protecting Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten
DESCRIPTION:Climate Workshop: Protecting Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Date & Time\n Tue\, April 8th\, 20251:30 PM – 3:30 PM PDT \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location\n The Embark Studio\, SUB 1310\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Join Dr. Tim Takaro and Natasha Ivkov in this workshop about building a stronger anti-TMX movement through student-led advocacy\, collaboration\, and direct action! \n \n \n \n \n \n About the event\nSḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) refers to Burnaby Mountain as Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten\, “where the bark gets peeled in spring.” The name is derived from the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw word for arbutus tree\, lhulhuḵw’ay\, which comes from lhuḵw’ (peel) and means “always peeling”. When we recognize place names like Lhuḵw’lhuḵw’áyten\, we are acknowledging the original histories that have been here since time immemorial\, prior to the colonization of these spaces. \nThe Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline continues to be a critical issue impacting our communities\, environment\, and future. As students and community members\, we have a role to play in shaping the response\, ensuring that voices of resistance are heard\, and building collective strategies for action. This event is a follow-up to the recent community town hall on TMX\, offering an opportunity to deepen student understanding of the project\, its ongoing effects\, and what we can do moving forward to stay prepared. We’ll explore how students can effectively organize on campus and beyond\, discuss key updates on TMX\, and share practical tools for mobilization\, advocacy\, and direct action. Whether you’re new to organizing or already involved\, this session is a space for connection\, collaboration\, and preparation. By coming together\, we can strengthen our networks\, learn from one another\, and build a more resilient movement. The conversation doesn’t end at awareness—this is about taking meaningful steps toward action. \n \n \n \n \n \n Land ACKNOWLEDGEMENT\nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. \n \n \n \n \n \n ABOUT THE FACILITATORS\nDr. Tim Takaro (he/him)Dr. Takaro is a professor emeritus and physician-scientist in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University. His research is primarily about the links between human exposures and disease\, and planetary health. With immense gratitude to the First Peoples\, he is beginning to use Indigenous knowledge to relearn environmental health as he tests different interventions in climate action and planet protection. This collaboration and the failure to stop TMX with the usual academic public health approach of education and advocacy\, Dr. Takaro led Protect the Planet into the trees to block construction\, resulting in his incarceration in June 2022. \nNatasha Ivkov (she/her)Natasha is a third-year Chemistry major and Sustainable Development minor at SFU\, and a core organizer with SFU350. She is passionate about fighting for equity in intersecting movements and has been doing community organizing since 2019. With SFU350\, she has learned a lot about TMX resistance\, and is working on advocating for proper emergency response measures to be implemented in the area surrounding the Trans Mountain Tank Farm. \n  \n \n Register now\n \n \n \n \n \n Event Accessibility\nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark Sustainability members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Sustainability Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the Embark Studio\, room #1310 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. She led distributed\, base-building organizing across Atlantic Canada that pushed dozens of municipalities in the region to recognize the Right to a Healthy Environment. She spent 7 years with the 350.org Canada team to build people-power to confront the power of the fossil fuel industry and to build public support for Green New Deal scale ambition to tackle the climate crisis. She has trained hundreds of organizers through Olivia Chow’s Institute for Change Leaders\, and was a part of the core organizing team who had Joel Harden\, MPP for Ottawa Centre\, first elected. She now works for the David Suzuki Foundation’s Climate Team\, working to grow support for climate-saving clean energy that leaves no one behind. In her spare time she likes to spend time with her dogs\, in nature\, or tending to her chickens and her garden on her hobby farm. \n \nSamantha Myran\, Lawyer – West Coast Environmental Law \nSam Myran (she/her/ikwe) was born in Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, and is from Giinooshkoodeyang\, now known as Long Plain First Nation in southern Manitoba. Following that winter\, Samantha returned to post-secondary studies to earn an Associate of Arts in Aboriginal Studies from Langara College\, a Bachelor of Arts in First Nations and Indigenous Studies from the University of British Columbia\, and a Juris Doctor from the University of Manitoba. During her academic career\, Samantha became a member of many student groups including the Alliance of British Columbia Students through her role with the Langara Students Union as the Aboriginal Students Advisor\, the Langara Aboriginal Students Association\, and the Manitoba Indigenous Law Students Association. In community she has been a part of planning such events as elders’ trips\, an Aboriginal Veteran’s Day Pow Wow\, and family days in the Central Park of Winnipeg. Earlier in her career\, Paige worked in public libraries and completed her master’s degree in Gender and Social Justice. But after a period of climate despair and depression\, she found a home in climate movement. She first cut her teeth organizing sit-ins\, marches\, and blockades in support of land-based resistance movements\, and later campaigning for free public transit as a climate and racial justice intervention. Once upon a time\, she even ran for federal office with a campaign for a just transition to 100% renewables. As Dogwood’s Organizing Manager\, Paige is hard at work building grassroots power in the Lower Mainland toward bold climate action. SUMMARY:Co-creating a Climate Resilient SFU
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of interactive dialogue with SFU’s community to exchange ideas and insight towards a climate resilient SFU. \nAbout this event\nThe SFU Sustainability Office\, Embark Sustainability Society\, SFU 350\, and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions have teamed up to host an evening of community dialogue\, inviting SFU community members to share their ideas and experiences with climate impacts and adaptation on campus! This event will provide students\, staff\, and faculty a chance to share their perspectives on what it means to build a resilient community as the climate changes. The goal is to introduce SFU’s work so far in developing a Climate Resilience Plan and to provide a platform for community members to contribute their insights and input into what SFU can do now. \nIncreasing temperatures in and out of buildings on campus and extreme snowfall events are just two consequences of climate change currently felt by community members at SFU’s three campuses. Projected changes in climate include hotter summers\, increased wildfires\, extreme weather events\, and increased precipitation\, which could lead to health and safety hazards for the community. Other potential consequences include decreased productivity of students and staff\, risk of loss of research data\, and increased difficulty in operating labs and classrooms. These are just a few reasons why climate adaptation is crucial for a sustainable and climate resilient future at SFU. \nThis event will consist of numerous dialogues that center on engaging the broader SFU community (students\, faculty\, staff) to share their input on the anticipated impacts and risks that the university will experience from the shocks and stresses of climate change. This dialogue aims to provide a better image of what the community considers to be important and what actions SFU should further take to accommodate these needs. Note that this event will be focused on climate change impacts and climate adaptation actions. If you would like to read more about SFU’s climate mitigation efforts\, you can access the 2025 Strategic Sustainability Plan. \nDuring the event\, attendees will be asked to share images of how you’ve seen impacts of climate change around you. If any participants would like to prepare beforehand\, we encourage them to come prepared with some images they wish to share for this digital activity. \nAttendees will be entered in a draw to win a $50 gift card! \n*The insights from this event will directly contribute to the development of an SFU Climate Resilience Plan. While this event will not be recorded\, we will be taking notes from the discussions. \nACCESSIBILITY\, TECHNOLOGY AND PRIVACY\nAccessibility \nClosed captioning will be available for this event. \nWe will be able to offer ASL interpretation for this event. For us to book and secure an interpreter\, please let us know at rite_steele@sfu.ca by Thursday\, May 20th at 4pm. \nRegistration and password \nA zoom link and password to access this event will be sent to all registrants via email before the event. \nTechnology requirements \nThis workshop will be presented in a participatory webinar format. To engage fully you will need: \nA laptop\, computer\, or smartphone \nA webcam \nA microphone \nSpeakers or headphones \nProtecting your privacy \nTo ensure that we are using online meeting technology in a privacy-conscious way\, we are following best practices for this online event series: \nWe will only circulate the meeting link to those who are registered for the event \nWe will password protect the meeting \nCommunity guidelines \nAbove all\, there will be zero tolerance for those who promote violence against others on the basis of race\, ethnicity\, national origin\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, religious affiliation\, or different ability. Anyone who incites harm towards other participants (be it through the chat\, video or audio functions) will be removed at the discretion of our technical team and moderator. \nBe as present as possible (put away phone\, close/mute tabs). \nThoughtful questions are welcome in the chat throughout the session. If your question is for a particular speaker\, type “@name” at the beginning. \nRespect the opinions of others. SUMMARY:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action - Climate Literacy 101: On a Path to Climate Success
DESCRIPTION:Session 2: From Myths to Effective Climate Action \nWednesday\, June 3rd \n12pm-1pm \nDr. Mark Jaccard will speak on how climate-concerned citizens can overcome myths that hinder us from acting in time to prevent extreme climate impacts. Their actions can involve personal consumption choices (electric vehicles\, heat pumps) but these only have an effect if citizens are also engaged in the political process and civil society to elect and support climate-sincere politicians. These personal and collective efforts must align with and foster a global strategy of decarbonization\, especially in developing countries. Come to the talk to find out what is required on a simple path to climate success and what you can contribute. \n  \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a Virtual Lunch & Learn Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nAre you an SFU student\, faculty member\, or staff climate champion committed to growing your understanding of climate science and pathways for change? \nClimate Literacy 101 is an opportunity to learn from and engage with leading climate science and policy experts at Simon Fraser University. We are grateful to have Dr. Kirsten Zickfeld and Dr. Mark Jaccard presenting on the state of the climate and how citizens can contribute to climate success\, and participating in a Q&A session over Zoom. The event series\, co-hosted by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions and Embark\, will close with information about ongoing campus climate action initiatives and ways to get involved at SFU.

SUMMARY:Student Climate Engagement Session
DESCRIPTION:Embark\, SFU350\, and ChangeSFU (officially known as the Climate Coalition) are organizing a climate emergency engagement session and we thought you may be interested in attending! \nAs a contribution to the larger climate emergency engagement process taking place at SFU\, the Climate Coalition is organizing a session that is specifically for students as we want to make sure there is space for our voices to be heard\, our ideas to be shared\, and connections to be made through this pressing crisis that affects us all! Before a climate emergency is declared\, we want to ensure that all students have the opportunity to share their perspective\, which is why\, through this event\, we want to create a safe space for any SFU student – regardless of their involvement in climate action – to share their thoughts\, concerns\, and proposals for how SFU can proceed as a leader in the fight against climate change. \nOur session will focus on why climate action matters to students and how it affects us both inside and outside the classroom. The session will be held on Monday\, February 3rd from 12:30 – 2:30 pm on the Burnaby Campus (location TBD) and light refreshments will be provided. RSVP is required as space is limited. Please RSVP here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FFNFJN6. \nBy participating in this engagement session\, you will be providing valuable student input for the climate emergency declaration process. \nWe hope to see you there!
