SUMMARY:Food is Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Let’s discover how traditional and cultural food can be a simple\, yet still powerful connection to your community. \nThis April’s Community Kitchen is in collaboration with First Nations\, Métis and Inuit Student Association (FNMISA). We invite you to reflect on what it means to access your culture in urban spaces and learn about this in the context of Urban Indigenous folks from the perspective of Raven\, this month’s facilitator and fellow SFU student. Join Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre for a guided discussion about food as we discover how traditional and cultural food can be a simple\, yet powerful connection to your community. \nYou’ll get to: \n👯 Meet new people \n🧑‍🍳 Explore and eat cultural Métis foods: Bullets and Bangs with tea \n💬 Chat with your newfound community \n😋 Share and enjoy a delish meal \nRSVP ASAP to secure your spot. Members of all gender identities and expressions are welcome! \n\nACKNOWLEDGMENTS \nThis event takes place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. \n\nABOUT THE FACILITATOR \nTansi\, hello. My name is Raven King Stierle (she/her/wiya)\, I am a REM and Political Science student and board member of the First Nations\, Métis and Inuit Student Association (FNMISA). My family is Cree and Métis from Peepeekisis Cree Nation in Treaty 4 territory. \nMy own chosen home now is just outside of Whitehorse\, Yukon with my partner and two dogs (Skookum and Timber) but I was born and raised in Surrey\, BC; the traditional territory and gathering place of the Katzie\, Kwantlen\, Tsleil Waututh\, Musqueam\, and other Coast Salish nations. \nGrowing up an urban Native I was taught to respect and honour the host Nations\, and to not forget who I was and who my family and community are. Food is medicine. It’s the most important part of any gathering\, it feeds your spirit and grounds you. I’m excited to share some of my family’s culture with you all. Ekosi. \n\nEVENT ACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby.
