DESCRIPTION:Let’s discover how traditional and cultural food can be a simple\, yet still powerful connection to your community. \nThis April’s Community Kitchen is in collaboration with First Nations\, Métis and Inuit Student Association (FNMISA). We invite you to reflect on what it means to access your culture in urban spaces and learn about this in the context of Urban Indigenous folks from the perspective of Raven\, this month’s facilitator and fellow SFU student. Join Embark Sustainability and the SFSS Women’s Centre for a guided discussion about food as we discover how traditional and cultural food can be a simple\, yet powerful connection to your community. \nYou’ll get to: \n👯 Meet new people \n🧑‍🍳 Explore and eat cultural Métis foods: Bullets and Bangs with tea \n💬 Chat with your newfound community \n😋 Share and enjoy a delish meal \nRSVP ASAP to secure your spot. My name is Raven King Stierle (she/her/wiya)\, I am a REM and Political Science student and board member of the First Nations\, Métis and Inuit Student Association (FNMISA). My family is Cree and Métis from Peepeekisis Cree Nation in Treaty 4 territory. \nMy own chosen home now is just outside of Whitehorse\, Yukon with my partner and two dogs (Skookum and Timber) but I was born and raised in Surrey\, BC; the traditional territory and gathering place of the Katzie\, Kwantlen\, Tsleil Waututh\, Musqueam\, and other Coast Salish nations. \nGrowing up an urban Native I was taught to respect and honour the host Nations\, and to not forget who I was and who my family and community are. Food is medicine. It’s the most important part of any gathering\, it feeds your spirit and grounds you. I’m excited to share some of my family’s culture with you all. Ekosi. \n\nEVENT ACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at the SUB Community Kitchen\, room #2125 of the Student Union Building (SUB)\, SFU Burnaby. Accessibility details include: \nAs we’ll be addressing sensitive topics\, it’s important that our attendees are able to address their needs in the moment. Attendees are free to opt in and opt out of activities as suits their needs throughout the event\, including exiting and re-entering the event space. \nUnfortunately\, some appliances and counter areas of this room are not accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids. The dining/lounge area is accessible when using a wheelchair or other mobility aids. \nWe aim to host a scent-free space. Please refrain from wearing scented products in attendance of this event. \nUnfortunately\, we cannot provide ASL interpretation at this time. We will be providing written recipe instructions. \nWe aim to make our events accessible to as many of our community members as possible. DESCRIPTION:Join Embark Sustainability for an evening of activities to help you explore the concept of climate equity and what it means to you! \nThis is the event for you who are climate curious and want to feel more climate confident. Join us for an evening centring YOU (communities and people) and how your unique passions\, skills\, and interests can fill gaps in climate justice spaces. Through interactive activities\, and inspiring speakers we’ll explore the meaning of climate equity and its connection to you. \nYou don’t need any previous knowledge or experience – come as you are and be introduced to a community that will lead you to find your passions and personal connections to climate equity. Let’s start writing your climate story! \nYou can expect to leave this event with a better understanding of: \n📣 How to speak out\, find the confidence to take action\, and trust in your ability to advocate for change \n🌎 What climate topics interest you the most \n💚 How angles of your personal life\, skills\, passions\, and dreams can connect to climate equity \nRSVP required! \n  \nSPEAKER \nAK Saini (they/she) \nDirector of Organizing\, Organizing for Change (OFC) \nAK brings to OFC nearly two decades of experience in grassroots community organizing with a particular passion for people-powered policy change. They played a lead role in organizing to win an historic raise in the U.S. federal tipped minimum wage and the decriminalization of medical cannabis in New York State. She is a proud daughter of working-class immigrants\, political science graduate of the University of Toronto and McMaster University\, and human to fur babies Mitz & Fitz the cats. \n  \nAGENDA \n5 mins: Embark Sustainability Introduction & Acknowledgement \n25 mins: Speakers share their climate stories \n60 mins: Activity stations (15 mins x 4 stations) \n25 mins: Storyboarding process\, opportunity to share within the groups if comfortable \n5 mins: Conclusion \n  \nLAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT \nThis event will take place on the unceded homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish)\, səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and kʷikʷəƛw̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Nations. Unceded means that this land was never surrendered\, transferred or relinquished in any way and\, as such\, the land remains sovereign Indigenous territory. \n  \nACCESSIBILITY \nEmbark Sustainability events are free and open to Embark members which includes Simon Fraser University undergraduate and graduate students\, as well as Embark Associate Members. \nThis event will be held indoors at SFU Burnaby in the SUB Ballroom (located on the 5th floor of the SUB).
