Location: Simon Fraser University (SFU) - Surrey, Burnaby, and Vancouver (alternating locations)

Compensation:  $21 - $22.50/hour (commensurate with experience) + benefits

Hours of Work:  35 hours per week

Embark is a student-led not-for-profit located on the SFU campuses that empowers students to become sustainability leaders through grants, training, and engagement. Our work is supported by the 30,000+ undergraduate and graduate student members that we represent.

We are seeking a new Communications and Operations Manager for the 2017-2018 year. In this newly created position, the Communications and Operations Manager is responsible for expanding Embark’s media presence while ensuring that the day-to-day needs of the organization are met. The Communications and Operations Manager is directly responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of Embark’s communication and digital engagement strategy across of a variety of outlets by writing press releases, drafting social media content, releasing newsletters, designing graphics, and updating our website.

The Communications and Operations Manager will also be tasked with ensuring the essential operating needs of the organization are met. They will be expected to respond to student inquiries, book rooms, and administer a grant totalling $10,000 per year. The Communications and Operations Manager will work closely with Embark’s Executive Director, Programs Manager, and volunteers.



  • Lead the implementation of the Embark’s media relations strategy, including but not limited to generating social media content, drafting press releases, blog posts, and updating our website.

  • Coordinate the production of the Embark’s email newsletter and print materials.

  • Create and design digital and physical copies of materials (e.g., e-posters, print posters, event graphics, social media graphics etc.) for Embark’s programs.

  • Liaise and maintain good working relationships with news media organizations and act as Embark’s media contact.

  • Draft press releases and internal communications documents.

  • Mentor media volunteers to build skills, contribute to campaigns, and manage Embark’s social identity online:

    • Coordinate and lead a team of media volunteers that manage the society’s online presence, generate and share content, and monitor engagement.

    • Conduct regular social media analysis and create content plans and schedules.

    • Train and generate educational opportunities for volunteers to learn about media skills and promotion strategies.


  • Respond to student inquiries through email and in person.

  • Use volunteer management software to organize, manage, and communicate with students involved with or interested in media volunteer opportunities.

  • Liaise with SFU Meeting, Events, and Conference Services to book rooms, equipment, and catering for Embark’s programs and events.

  • Lead the organization’s granting committee and related processes to support all phases of the granting process, including application intake, application review, funding approval, evaluation, and project reporting.

  • Reach out to innovative student groups and professors/instructors leading classes with the potential to generate innovative student projects.

Accountability and Reporting

  • Provide a written summary of impact and activities for our Annual Report.

  • Keep records of the design material created for Embark’s programs.  

  • Maintain database of news outlets and press releases.

  • Attend regular staff meetings and communicate with supervisors.

Ideal Candidates Have:

  • Experience in communications and operations, preferably in a non-profit organizational setting, is an asset.

  • Passion for working with a student- and learning-oriented organization.

  • A post-secondary degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, interactive arts and technology or a combination of related work and educational experience.

  • Experience in graphic design or photo editing using Adobe Creative Cloud Suite applications (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom).

  • Familiarity with Hootsuite is an asset.

  • Strong writing, editing and communications skills and an interest in using photography as a tool for engagement.

  • Experience with or willingness to learn using Client Relation Management programs like Nationbuilder.

  • Previous experience in a university setting or complex multi-stakeholder environment.

  • A sharp eye for proofreading, organizational ability and flexibility to deal with shifting priorities.

  • Comfortable following branding requirements outlined in the Embark Design and Branding Guidelines.
