Programs Manager

Hours: 35 hours per week

Dates of work: May 25, 2017 - June 1, 2018

Compensation: $20.68 per hour + 4% vacation pay

Reports to: Executive Director

Embark is a student-led non-profit that provides resources that empower SFU students to be inspired changemakers in their communities. We offer grants, events, and training opportunities to students, operate a community garden and sustainability leadership program, and work with the university and elected officials to advance social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Our work is supported by the 30,000+ undergraduate and graduate student members that we represent.

The Programs Manager is responsible for catalyzing a range of programming in our strategic priority areas by providing leadership to volunteers and Coordinators. One of the Programs Manager’s key responsibilities involves co-creating and leading the Sustainability Peer Educator Program (“Peer Program”) in conjunction with a SFU Sustainability Office staff member. Within this program the Programs Manager supports the Sustainability Projects Coordinator, whose responsibilities involve engaging the Peer Educators in sustainability project development and related skills, such as event planning and volunteer management.

The Programs Manager trains and works with volunteers and Coordinators throughout the academic school year, providing opportunities for their personal and professional development. On an on-going basis, the Programs Manager recruits volunteers and seeks to involve them in areas of interest. As a team, Embark’s volunteer base raises awareness about on-campus sustainability issues and move SFU towards becoming a more sustainable university.

The Programs Manager continually seeks opportunities to forge partnerships with campus and community partners that have common goals and leverages these relationships to advance the goals of all implicated groups. Additionally, the Programs Manager designs and administers evaluation of programs so that Embark can continually evolve and most effectively serve its members. This position reports to and works very closely with Embark’s Executive Director.

Qualifications

  • Completion of an undergraduate or graduate program

  • Experience developing programs for sustainability outreach and advocacy

  • Experience managing volunteers and providing guidance

  • Ability to engage in and provide non-directive coaching

  • Ability to develop and facilitate leadership programs

  • Ability to professionally represent the organization in interactions with stakeholders throughout the university

  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet deadlines

  • Excellent organizational, administrative, research, analytical, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Excellent leadership and project management skills

  • Professional and context-appropriate online communication skills

  • Proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, online calendars, and email

  • Experience working in a not-for-profit environment is an asset

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and/or web management is an asset
